Biological Sciences Virtual Colloquium: The Role of the Basement Membrane in Brain Morphogenesis

April 30, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Libby Falat, PhD candidate in the Department of Biological Sciences at UW-Milwaukee, will present a talk about her research, entitled ‘The Role of the Basement Membrane in Brain Morphogenesis’.

The ability of organs to execute specific functions relies heavily on proper tissue structure. Dysregulation of morphogenetic events can result in abnormal function and disease. Intracellular components, such as the cytoskeletal network, have been established as essential contributors to regulating cell shape change and tissue morphogenesis. However, there remains a significant gap in our understanding of how interactions between cells and their extracellular environment mediate morphogenetic processes. The basement membrane, a specific type of extracellular matrix, is emerging as a dynamic network critical for regulating mechanical forces required during morphogenesis. Here Libby presents her work using the zebrafish highly conserved midbrain-hindbrain boundary (MHB) as a tissue model. She will show data measuring cell and tissue shape and will present an exciting method she is currently using to measure tissue forces and mechanics in vivo to uncover the role of the basement membrane in brain morphogenesis.

The presentation will begin at 4:00 PM via Microsoft Teams, preceded by an informal Q&A from 3:45 – 4:00 PM.
