Biological Sciences Colloquium: Dr. Michael Laiosa

April 21, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Dr. Michael Laiosa, Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences and Faculty Chair in the Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health, will present a talk entitled, “Growing up with the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor: A twenty-five-year journey from a toxicological sensor to a metabolic regulator during immune system development.”

The abstract is as follows:

During the late 1990’s and early 2000’s the paradigm for the Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) was one characterized by leveraging its quirk as a ligand-activated transcription factor responsive to the human-created chemical dioxin, for understanding the biological function of the receptor. With the advent of novel gene-targeted animal models and identification of pharmacological modulators during the late-aughts, the paradigm shifted with growing evidence that the AHR has a critical role in stem and progenitor cells during development. As we enter the twenties, learn how the Laiosa laboratory leverages all of these tools toward the next paradigm whereby the AHR is placed at the nexus of key metabolic decision points occurring during the blood formation process referred to as hematopoiesis.

The presentation will take place in Lapham Hall S160 at 4:00 PM, preceded by an informal reception from 3:45 – 4:00 PM.
