Apply to UWM

We’re excited that you’re considering applying to our M.S. or Ph.D. program! To apply for admission, please complete the appropriate UWM Graduate School online application:

Atmospheric Science M.S.
Atmospheric Science Ph.D.

If you aren’t currently working toward or haven’t completed an M.S., we strongly encourage you to apply to the M.S. program – even if you intend to eventually complete the Ph.D. program.

Application Requirements

The application has four required elements:

  • A personal or research statement.
  • Unofficial copies of your undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate transcripts.
  • The names of the faculty member(s) with whom your research interests most closely align.
  • Contact information for three references who have agreed to provide a letter of recommendation in support of your application.

For international applicants who completed their studies at a university where English was not the sole language of instruction, proof of English proficiency is also required. More details are available from UWM’s Center for International Education.

We do not require that you submit GRE scores. Unfortunately, we cannot waive the $75 application fee; however, UWM typically provides an application fee waiver to prospective students who attend the Graduate School Open House and start their application after that date (typically mid-Fall).

Applications for Fall admission must be completed by January 31. Although limited funding is typically available for students beginning in the spring, students who wish to be considered for Spring admission must complete their application by November 1.

Further information is available from UWM’s Graduate School.

Admissions Process

The Fall admissions process typically proceeds according to the following timeline:

  • Early February: The faculty meet to review applications and make initial admissions decisions.
  • Mid-Late February: The faculty’s recommendations are reviewed and approved by the School of Freshwater Sciences.
  • By March 1: Official offer letters are sent to the initial group of admitted students.
  • By April 15: Students who have received an offer from us must accept or decline the offer by this date.

We continue the admissions process on a rolling basis until all available positions are filled, which typically occurs by the end of April. Our program is somewhat unique in that we typically do not admit students unless we can also provide them with an assistantship or fellowship, including tuition waiver. If you wish to be considered for admission without funding, however, please contact the Program Chair to indicate this request. Likewise, please feel free to contact the Program Chair with any questions you may have about the application process, your application’s status, or anything else related to applying. We look forward to reviewing your application!
