For each program\, the curator is invited to program a selection of films around a theme of their choosing. \nThe Cinema Arts Archive now contains over 400 essential works on 16mm film\, and a handful on 35mm\, from a range of historic and contemporary cinema. This unique and expansive archive continues to preserve\, grow\, and reflect the ever-evolving landscape of avant-garde film—representing a commitment to the past\, present\, and future of the medium. Alongside giants like Hollis Frampton\, Bruce Baillie\, Deborah Stratman\, and Jennifer Reeves lie many lesser-known gems ready to ignite curiosity and expand minds. SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: The Works of Alisi Telengut
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeTuesday\, October 27\, 2026 (7–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationUWM Union Cinema \n\n\nAlisi Telengut is a Canadian artist of Mongolian roots living between Berlin and Montréal/Tiohtià:ke. She creates frame-by-frame\, under-the-camera animations using mixed media\, including oil pastel\, sand\, stones\, crystals\, and found materials. Through handmade and painterly processes\, her work explores human-nature relationships\, animistic worldviews\, and Indigenous knowledge systems of Mongolian peoples. \nTelengut will join us for a virtual Q-and-A! \nHer films have screened and exhibited internationally at venues and festivals including the Whitney Biennial\, Sundance Film Festival\, Annecy International Animation Film Festival\, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)\, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures\, VIDEONALE at Kunstmuseum Bonn\, and many more. Telengut is a Canadian Screen Award-nominated artist and a Prix Iris winner for Best Animated Film. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeTuesday\, November 17\, 2026 (7–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationUWM Union Cinema \n\n\nCurated by MFA candidates from the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation and New Genres\, these programs feature a unique opportunity to see some of the incredible 16mm prints from the UWM Cinema Arts Archive. For each program\, the curator is invited to program a selection of films around a theme of their choosing. \nThe Cinema Arts Archive now contains over 400 essential works on 16mm film\, and a handful on 35mm\, from a range of historic and contemporary cinema. This unique and expansive archive continues to preserve\, grow\, and reflect the ever-evolving landscape of avant-garde film—representing a commitment to the past\, present\, and future of the medium. Alongside giants like Hollis Frampton\, Bruce Baillie\, Deborah Stratman\, and Jennifer Reeves lie many lesser-known gems ready to ignite curiosity and expand minds. While the collection aims to capture an array of crucial cinematic history\, modes\, and movements\, the majority of work is artist-made\, short form\, and experimental in nature. \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.

SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: The World and Works of Portia Cobb
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeTuesday & Wednesday\, December 1-2\, 2026 (7–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationUWM Union Cinema \n\n\nJoin us for two nights of works celebrating the radical work of the legendary Portia Cobb. Her interdisciplinary practice as an artist and filmmaker is deeply interested in telling stories that reflect the double-consciousness of African American history\, identity\, memory & forced forgetting. This creative body of work and research has joined these themes and found form in videos\, photographic essays\, field recordings\, ephemeral installations and site-specific performances. \nThe Spring of 2026 marked her final semester as a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Peck School of The Arts: Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres.
