For each program\, the curator is invited to program a selection of films around a theme of their choosing. \nThe Cinema Arts Archive now contains over 400 essential works on 16mm film\, and a handful on 35mm\, from a range of historic and contemporary cinema. This unique and expansive archive continues to preserve\, grow\, and reflect the ever-evolving landscape of avant-garde film—representing a commitment to the past\, present\, and future of the medium. Alongside giants like Hollis Frampton\, Bruce Baillie\, Deborah Stratman\, and Jennifer Reeves lie many lesser-known gems ready to ignite curiosity and expand minds. Local monuments to past tornadoes intertwine with mythologies of settlement and displacement. An amateur storm chaser questions his own agency and fate. The CEO of a Wizard of Oz-themed storm shelter company describes a growing market in a world of increasing weather uncertainty. Unfolding episodically\, questions of memory\, inequality\, colonization\, climate change\, and disaster capitalism arise as the film examines legacies of weather within the region colloquially known as “tornado alley.”  \nCurtis Miller is a filmmaker and artist based in Chicago\, IL. His work often takes the American Midwest as both site and subject. His films have screened internationally at Visions du Réel\, IDFA\, DMZ Docs\, Glasgow Short Film Festival\, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival\, Antimatter\, EXiS\, and the Chicago International Film Festival\, as well as the Hyde Park Arts Center\, Gallery 400\, and the Renaissance Society\, among others. A film she edited MA premiered at the Venice Film Festival\,  All That Passes By Through A Window That Doesn’t Open\, a film she co-wrote and edited\, won the Regard Neuf Award at Visions Du Reel in 2017 and A Machine To Live In premiered at True False in 2020. King Coal premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2023 – a NYT Critics Pick.  Most recently\, John Lilly and The Earth Coincidence Control Office premiered in Rotterdam IFF and MOMA’s Doc Fortnight 2025.  \nSignatures\, or the Bass Line of a Freighter Ship\, her chapbook of poems was published by Bottlecap Press.  Iva’s three channel installation Enter The Aleph was commissioned and installed at the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art in 2023.  Her first art book\, Avenue of The Living\, is published by Big Black Mountain press in Athens\, Greece.   \nShe’s a PhD candidate at Villa Arson in Nice\, France. Her new film When The Phone Rang received the Special Mention Award at the 77th Locarno Film Festival and continues to win awards worldwide. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeTuesday\, November 4\, 2025 (8–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationUWM Union Cinema \n\n\nKen Jacobs\, one of the true radicals of American cinema and a lion of experimental film\, passed October 5th\, a mere season since his beloved wife and collaborator Flo preceded him. They lived long\, full\, beautiful lives. In addition to his inimitable work in film\, video\, painting\, performance and all range of moving images\, Ken started and was at the center of the film program at SUNY-Binghamton and co-founded The Millennium Film Workshop. \nOften dense\, visually-mesmerizing and powerfully constructed\, his works engage deeply with visual processes\, our phenomenological experiences of cinema and our considerable possibilities for perceptual dimension. The two works on celluloid—both from our own Cinema Arts Archive!—we’ll be showing this evening are true masterworks of found/appropriative/collage-brative film: Blond Cobra is made from two abandoned works by his friends\, artists Bob Fleischner and Jack Smith\, combined into a shimmering and lush film with a series of Brechtian disruptions and indeterminacies; Perfect Film is a “record of events literally preserved as found from the curving room floor; carelessly strung on a reel [and] and bought for $5 on Canal Street” depicting\, demonstrating and becoming media in the immediate aftermath of the murder of Malcom X. She got her MFA in Film/Video at Bard College in 2010. They have received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts\, Ohio Arts Council\, UnionDocs NYC and Visual Studies Workshop. They have been residents at the Headlands\, Visual Studies Workshop and MacDowell. They have created the Feral Domestic trilogy from 2017-2021 (Strangely Ordinary This Devotion\, Come Coyote and Future From Inside) and published an accompanying text with Visual Studies Workshop in 2022. Siren compositions from over 20 contemporary musicians form a resonant voice to ask; Does an alarm have to be alarming?  \nAura Satz’s inventive documentary\, the latest iteration of the artist’s ongoing project on sirens\, is sonic collage\, design history\, and thought experiment in equal measure. Filming in locations as varied as the Fukushima nuclear site in Japan and alert-system assembly lines in the US\, Satz considers the siren as a cipher for contemporary ideas of emergency and preparedness. He passed away in April 2025\, leaving behind a profound legacy as an artist\, teacher\, and friend to many in the experimental film community.  \nPlease join us for a screening dedicated to Nishikawa’s work—a celebration of his singular vision and lasting influence. His films\, often shot on 8mm and 16mm\, explore the act of observation through material processes and formal experimentation. With a deep attentiveness to place\, rhythm\, and perception\, his works illuminate the beauty and complexity of the everyday.  \nNishikawa’s films have been presented at major festivals and institutions around the world\, including Berlinale\, Rotterdam\, Edinburgh\, Toronto\, and the New York Film Festival. In 2010\, MoMA PS1 exhibited a selection of his films\, and his installation Building 945 received the 2008 grant from the Museum of Contemporary Cinema in Spain. Imagery of settler-led planetary destruction is juxtaposed with sequences of underground group therapy sessions where settlers can lose\, forget\, and explore their identities in order to indigenize. Sharing their labor\, lurking through museums\, and institutions\, future accomplices snap thousands of cellphone pictures of every artifact and artwork on hand.  \nDeploying and containing confrontational representations around the stakes of accompliceship\, the video examines the dynamics influencing the conditions in which the concerns of indigenous people are often treated as a topic du jour and then co-opted by non-indigenous people\, alongside the search for ways to make amends.  \nNew Red Order is a public secret society facilitated by core contributors Adam Khalil\, Zack Khalil\, and Jackson Polys. In our current period of existential and environmental catastrophe\, desires for Indigenous epistemologies increase and enterprising settlers labor to extract this understanding as if it were a natural resource. New Red Order—emerging out of contradistinction from the Improved Order of Red Men\, a secret society that ‘plays Indian’—calls attraction toward indigeneity into question\, yet promotes this desire\, and enjoins potential non-Indigenous accomplices to participate in the co-examination and expansion of Indigenous agency. Working with an interdisciplinary network of informants the NRO co-produces video\, performance\, and installation works that confront settler colonial tendencies and obstacles to Indigenous growth. Craig Baldwin’s “pseudo-pseudo-documentary” presents a factual chronicle of US intervention in Latin America in the form of the ultimate far-right conspiracy theory\, combining covert action\, environmental catastrophe\, space aliens\, cattle mutilations\, killer bees\, religious prophecy\, doomsday diatribes\, and just about every other crackpot theory broadcast through the dentures of the modern paranoiac. \nTribulation 99 by Craig Baldwin  \n16mm | 1991 | 48 minutes | Color \nA delirious vortex of hard truths\, deadpan irony\, and archival mash-ups—industrials\, graphs\, cartoons\, movies from Hollywood B to Mexican Z—Tribulation 99 constructs a truly perverse vision of American imperialism.  \nPreceded by Stolen Movie  \nDigital file | 1976 | 9 minutes | Color  \nArmed with S8 camera and sound-person (John Corser)\, Baldwin runs both recording devices continously through single-take raids on a series of SF Market St. grindhouse theaters. Rushing past box offices and through front lobbies\, he captures the chance scenes and sounds on screen at the time\, then flees out the rear exit doors to re-unite with the reality of the street.  \n AS A FILMMAKER\, Baldwin’s works represent a radical fusion of form and content. Formally\, his films are constructed largely from audiovisual material appropriated from pre-existing films. In this\, they represent a radical stance toward media culture as a participatory field. As an artist\, Baldwin engages with mainstream media as an adversary\, using its languages in ironic opposition. A visceral\, sensory meditation on what it means to live in a broken world. Marianna Milhorat is an American-Canadian filmmaker and artist based in Montréal.  \nShe has presented her work at festivals and galleries worldwide\, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam\, Whitechapel Gallery\, Ann Arbor Film Festival\, Curtocircuíto International Film Festival\, Kassel Dokfest\, Videonale\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. \nA poetic portrait of contemporary wildlife conservation\, JUST ABOVE THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH reflects on empathy\, agency\, and the role of hope in the midst of a sixth mass extinction. This debut nonfiction feature examines scientists and citizen scientists who conduct surveys of frogs\, which serve as an indicator species; study sea stars threatened by disease; track bats whose populations have been decimated by white-nose syndrome; and collect data on insects declining at unprecedented rates. Set primarily at night\, the film weaves together observational and lyrical sequences\, texts written by authors including W.S. Merwin and Adam Nicolson\, and an otherworldly soundscape.  \nJUST ABOVE THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH is a visceral\, sensory meditation on what it means to live in a broken world.  \nMarianna Milhorat is an American-Canadian filmmaker and artist based in Montréal. DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, March 4\, 2025 (7–9 p.m.)\nUWM Union Cinema\n\n\n\n\nResolutely feminist in form and content\, Gibson’s films explore the personal and the political and draw on cult figures from experimental literature and poetry – from Kathy Acker to Gertrude Stein. Collapsing fiction and documentary\, and liquefying both\, they range from experimental autobiography to nocturnal thriller and cast friends and influences as their characters and co-creators. Collaboration and credit are at their heart. \nGibson is twice winner of The Tiger Award for Best Short Film Rotterdam International Film Festival\, (2009 and 2013). She was the winner of the 17th Baloise Art Prize\,Art Basel. She has been twice shortlisted for the The Jarman Award (2013 and 2019). In 2013 she was one of four artists shortlisted for the Max Mara Art Prize for Women.  \nGibson has recently had recent solo exhibitions at Ordet\, Milano (2023) Camden Arts Centre\, London\, Bergen Kunsthall\, Bergen Mercer Union\, Toronto (2019) and Julia Stoschek Collection / KW Institute for Contemporary Art\, Berlin\, (2018). Her films have shown at film festivals around the word\, including Cannes at New York Film Festival\, Toronto International Film Festival\, London Film Festival\, Courtisane Film Festival\, Punto De Vista International Documentary Film Festival and many more. A complete retrospective of Gibson’s films was screened at Fondazione Prada\, in December 2023.  \nGibson is currently developing her first feature with BBC films\, a love story\, set during the course of one night\, inspired by Kathy Acker’s Don Quixote and Alice Notley’s The Descent of Alette.   \nGibson is a also founding member of the monthly cinema club The Machine that Kills Bad People at the Institute of Contemporary Art\, London\, alongside Ben Rivers\, Maria Palacios Cruz and Erika Balsom. From public hearings to mysterious videotapes\, his work launches meditations on images\, race\, Hollywood\, and life under late capitalism.  \nA downloadable PDF of a public hearing in Alleghany\, New York; a mysterious videotape that becomes the center of a detective yarn; reflections on the history of the toxic Androscoggin River; or 35mm publicity stills scoured from movie studio press kits… in Wilkins’s able hands these things act as launching pads for freewheeling\, rhizomatic meditations on the photographed image\, representations of race\, the history of Hollywood\, and American life as lived under late capitalism. With a keen interest in language as both form and concept\, his work explores concrete texts\, political satire\, and the absurd. Exhibited globally at MoMA\, the Whitney Biennial\, and Centre Pompidou\, Rose’s art reimagines the boundaries of media and thought. \nSince 1968 Peter Rose has made over forty films\, tapes\, performances and installations. Many of the early works raise intriguing questions about the nature of time\, space\, light\, and perception and draw upon Rose’s background in mathematics and on the influence of structuralist filmmakers. \nHe subsequently became interested in language as a subject and in video as a medium and generated a substantial body of work that played with the feel and form of sense\, concrete texts\, political satire\, oddball performance\, and a kind of intellectual comedy. Recent video installations have involved a return to an examination of landscape\, time\, and vision. \nRose has been widely exhibited\, both nationally and internationally\, having been included in shows at the Museum of Modern Art\, the Whitney Biennial\, the Centre Pompidou\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Film Society at Lincoln Center\, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Ayanna Dozier is a Brooklyn-based artist-writer working across film (both motion picture and still)\, performance\, and installation.  \nHer films have screened at film festivals across the world including Crossroads\, Prismatic Ground\, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival\, Open City Docs\, and Aesthetica Film Festival where she was the recipient of Best Experimental in 2020 for her film Softer. Her work has been exhibited at Microscope Gallery\, The Shed\, Westbeth Gallery\, Evening Hours\, Anthology Film Archives\, and the Block Museum amongst other places.   \nIn addition to her creative practice she completed her Ph.D. in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University and is the author of The Velvet Rope as part of the 33 1/3 music series for Bloomsbury Academic Press. She was a 2018-2019 Helena Rubinstein Fellow in Critical Studies at the Whitney Independent Studies Program\, a Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art from 2017-2022\, a 2022 Winter Workspace Resident at Wave Hill\, and a filmmaker in residence at MONO NO AWARE from 2019-2020. Direct action is a tactical strategy of protest that seeks to achieve an end directly and by the most effective means.  \nDIRECT ACTION is a contemporary portrait of one of the most high-profile militant activist communities in France: a 150-person strong rural collective that successfully resisted an international airport expansion project in 2018\, created an autonomous zone between 2012 and 2018\, survived multiple violent eviction attempts by the French state and spawned a new ecological movement in 2021.  \nUsing a collaborative and immersive observational approach\, the film documents the everyday lives of a diverse ecosystem of activists\, squatters\, anarchists\, farmers and those labelled by the government as “eco-terrorists”. SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: Everything Everywhere Again Alive
DESCRIPTION:Dates\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nOctober 8\, 2024 (7–9 p.m.)\nUWM Union Cinema\n\n\n\n\nEverything Everywhere Again Alive is a landmark work of Canadian underground cinema\, a film diary with mystic and symbolic overtones. In the early 1970s\, Toronto filmmaker Keith Lock moved to Buck Lake\, where members of the Toronto art scene were undertaking an experiment in communal living.  \nLock filmed the achievements and daily rituals of his fellow communards\, his camera bearing witness as a community assembled and dispersed. The resulting film uses poetic strategies\, including logograms and other graphic disruptions\, to extend its themes of renewal and rebirth\, and to mark the encounter between reason and imagination\, the concrete and the abstract. \n1975\, 72 minutes. \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: The Dells by Nellie Kluz
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 24\, 2024 (7–9 p.m.)\nUWM Union Cinema\n\n\n\n\nJoin filmmaker Nellie Kluz in-person for a Q&A after the screening of The Dells. This film observes the clash between fantasy and reality faced by international student workers newly arrived in Wisconsin Dells\, Wisconsin – the self-described “Waterpark Capital of the World.”  \nComing from countries like Turkey\, Romania\, Jamaica\, Thailand\, and the Dominican Republic\, these students land in the American Midwest via the State Department’s Summer Work Travel program. Issued temporary J-1 visas\, they work low-paying jobs as lifeguards\, housekeepers\, and servers\, living in dormitories tucked behind a glut of tourist attractions.  \nThe film follows the rhythms of an ensemble cast of “J-1s” as they work\, party\, and cruise around town in taxis. Students weather the myriad headaches of making ends meet in the US – car troubles\, job losses\, long work hours – thanks to their friendships and youthful optimism. We see their hopes for a summer of American luck and prosperity rub up against their actual experiences\, which are by turns disappointing\, funny\, and transcendent.   \nNellie Kluz makes nonfiction films about collective rituals and the infrastructures that support them. She also works as a cinematographer and camera operator for others’ projects\, most recently the HBO show How to With John Wilson. Her films have screened at venues including Camden International Film Festival\, Chicago Underground Film Festival\, European Media Art Festival\, International Film Festival Rotterdam\, Maryland Film Festival\, Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, the UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art\, and others. Hills has been making dense\, intensely rhythmic experimental films since 1975. A longtime resident of New York’s East Village\, he has ongoing working relationships with the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Poets\, composer John Zorn\, and choreographer Sally Silvers.  \nSince 2005 he has been Visiting Professor at FAMU\, the Czech national film academy in Prague\, and currently lives in Vienna. He received a 2009 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship & his films\, which are included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art\, are available on DVD from Tzadik.
