SUMMARY:Special Features | Screen Playing: From Short Film to Feature
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeThursday\, March 5\, 2026 (6:30–8:30 p.m.) \n\n \n\nLocationMitchell Hall\, Fine Arts Cinema Room B91 \n\n\n \nThis workshop guides filmmakers through the process of transforming a short film script into a feature-length screenplay. Focusing on character depth\, narrative structure\, and thematic expansion\, students will explore how to grow a contained idea into a sustained\, compelling story without losing its core. Through practical frameworks and development strategies\, the session offers tools for reimagining scale\, stakes\, and arcs—helping writers envision their short film as the foundation for a feature. \n \nPatrick Michael is an award-winning screenwriter and director based in Los Angeles. He studied pre-medicine at the University of Washington before turning to filmmaking\, where he ultimately earned an MFA from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. Influenced by filmmakers such as Charles Burnett\, Mike Leigh\, and Lynne Ramsay\, his work examines identity\, memory\, and transformation\, crafting stories that blur the boundaries between the personal and the universal. His latest short film\, Black Silk\, screened in competition at major festivals including the Atlanta Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival\, and received the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Short at Dances With Films LA. He most recently had two scripts selected at the Austin Film Festival Writers Conference\, where his feature-length screenplay for Black Silk was awarded the Josephson Entertainment Fellowship Award. \n \nSpecial Features is an art and film focused professional development workshop series curated by the Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \n\n \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.

SUMMARY:Special Features | Impact Filmmaking: Documentary\, Advocacy & Community
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeThursday\, February 26\, 2026 (6:30–8:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationMitchell Hall\, Fine Arts Cinema Room B91 \n\n\nThis workshop explores documentary filmmaking as a tool for community advocacy and social impact. Attendees will examine how nonfiction stories can amplify marginalized voices\, engage local communities\, and move audiences toward awareness and action. Through case studies and practical discussion\, the workshop addresses ethical storytelling\, relationship-building with participants\, and strategies for designing films with impact beyond the screen—equipping emerging filmmakers to tell responsible\, community-centered stories that matter. \nOur guest\, Eric Kleppe-Montenegro is interested in challenging dominant narratives about marginalized communities and highlighting change-makers through storytelling. Growing up as a Colombian-American helped him understand the damage of pervasive stereotypes commonly reproduced in film and television. He also recognizes the true beauty that is left out of narrow perspectives\, a beauty which should be celebrated. Eric is passionate about creating impactful art that uplifts and inspires viewers. This passion led him to documenting social justice movements for the last decade\, specifically within the immigrant rights movement\, and allowed him to collaborate with creatives across lines of difference. \nSpecial Features is an art and film focused professional development workshop series curated by the Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \n \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.

SUMMARY:Special Features: OFFICIAL SELECTION | Film Festival Strategies & Campaigns
DESCRIPTION:Dates\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, December 4\, 2025 (6:30–8:30 p.m.)\nMitchell Hall\, Fine Arts Cinema Room B91\n\n\n\n\nLooking to learn more insight and practical knowledge on our larger art industries\, and how to prepare for an art-life post-graduation? Special Features is an artist talk and workshop series that is meant to provide filmmakers and artists with practical and insightful advice and skills as they navigate a variety of film industries. \nFilm festivals\, no matter how small or large\, can be such an important moment for an emerging artist. The feeling of watching your film on screen in a theatre amongst an audience\, when the lights dim and the first few seconds begin\, is like no other. But the road to festivals can feel like a mystical experience and one defined by luck or chance\, often making the goal of screening feel out of reach. At Special Features\, we’re interested in pulling you behind the curtain to make film festivals feel more attainable. From submission strategies to festival research to competitions\, rejections\, fees and waivers\, we’re going to dive deep into how to navigate film festivals for emerging filmmakers. \nThis workshop also will examine film festival programming as a possible career model within the film industry for those interested in more curatorial roles and positions. Our guest\, Nick Leffel\, will lead us into a bit of his career journey and offer his expertise on how to get your film seen. \nNick Leffel (UWM Film Alum) is a Chicago-based filmmaker and producer whose work explores themes of cultural upbringing\, adoption\, and personal narrative. His films have earned awards at the Hollywood Screenings Film Festival in Los Angeles\, the Liverpool Underground Film Festival\, and the Milwaukee Film Festival. He also serves as a coordinator for the Black Harvest Film Festival and as an assistant programmer at the Gene Siskel Film Center at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.
