Professional experience while earning your degree

Our studios are led by artist faculty, including members of the Milwaukee & Chicago Symphony Orchestras. Located within the cultural capital of Wisconsin, students regularly perform as soloists, chamber musicians, and with professional Milwaukee-area ensembles while earning their degree!

 

Cello, Double Bass and Harp
The mission of the cello, double bass and harp studios is to nurture the talent, creativity, and dedication of our performance, pedagogy, and chamber music students. Students are prepared for modern, multifaceted professional careers as performers and/or teachers of chamber ensemble, orchestral, and solo repertory. The program offers a thorough grounding in instrumental technique and repertory, and broad and continuous experience in performance.
Clarinet
The clarinet studio is led by Todd Levy, principal clarinet of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Students regularly perform as soloists, chamber musicians, and with professional Milwaukee-area ensembles while earning their degree.
Composition
Our composition studio fosters development in instrumental, vocal, and electroacoustic composition, with an emphasis on contemporary and experimental techniques.
Flute
The flute studio is comprised of undergraduate flute performance majors, music education majors, music minors, and non-majors. It supports the community, both pedagogically and socially, and presents opportunities for students of all degree levels and abilities.
Guitar
The guitar studio is led by world-renowned artist faculty. Offering classical and jazz focused programs, our students are able to customize a unique, comprehensive experience. We offer degree programs in guitar performance with a multi-style approach in which students choose a primary and secondary style focus. Classes in composition, technology, world music, pedagogy, and repertoire are designed to prepare students for a versatile career in music, one that may include performing, teaching, recording, and music publishing.
Oboe and Bassoon
The oboe and bassoon studios explore and progress in every aspect of double reed study, including technical mastery of the instrument, fundamental musicianship, repertoire, and reed making.
Percussion
The percussion studio provides a comprehensive approach to the study and performance of a wide variety of percussion instruments and the musical styles in which they are utilized. Diverse opportunities in ensembles and private lessons provide a well-rounded foundation for students to be successful professionals in the twenty-first century. Curriculum emphasizes the development of musicianship, creativity, and cultural awareness in addition to entrepreneurship and modern technological skills. Each student receives an individualized education that thoughtfully considers their past experiences and future career goals to provide a mixture of important curricular topics and student-driven goals.
Piano
The piano studio is led by renowned performing artist faculty. Piano majors take private lessons and master classes, and perform regularly in concerts and recitals. Our collaborative environment with an emphasis on vocal arts is one of few such undergraduate programs offered nationwide. It provides training for pianists anticipating careers in vocal accompanying, as well as coaching art song, opera and musical theatre. Students receive weekly lessons in collaborative piano, as well as solo piano and piano technique. They also participate in rehearsals and performances for the UWM Opera Theatre, Milwaukee Opera Theatre and UWM choirs.
Saxophone
The saxophone studio consists of undergraduate and graduate music majors, minors, and non-majors. We aim to promote the popularity of the saxophone through innovative, diverse, and versatile programming and performing. Our mission is to share music in ways that are both collaborative and engaging for students and community members. With education, performance, and outreach as a core component of our mission, students regularly perform on and off campus at various venues. Students study both classical and jazz, in addition to regularly premiering new works by composers both on and off campus.
Trombone and Tuba/Euphonium
The trombone and tuba/euphonium studios are led by Mark Hoelscher and Andy Smith. Located within the cultural capital of Wisconsin, students regularly perform as soloists, chamber musicians, and with professional Milwaukee-area ensembles while earning their degree.
Trumpet and Horn
The faculty members of the trumpet and horn studios are accomplished musician-educators of the highest level. Students receive one-on-one instruction and combine their studies with practical experience both on and off campus.
Violin and Viola
The violin and viola studios provide high quality education for students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our mission is to prepare local, out-of-state and international students to succeed in a variety of careers in music: soloist, orchestra and chamber musician, and string educator. This preparation includes access to tracks in performance, chamber music, music education and string pedagogy. The student experience is enhanced by master classes offered by faculty and guest artists and performance opportunities in solo and chamber music settings. Students interested in pedagogy and music education tracks can benefit from internships or clinics through the UWM String Academy, Milwaukee Public Schools and local strings programs such as Latino Arts or the Milwaukee Youth Symphony orchestra (MYSO).
Voice
Our competitive voice studios are led by renowned performing artist faculty who perform regularly with groups such as the Florentine Opera and Skylight Music Theatre. Students are invited to perform in opera productions, opera workshop performances, musicals, recitals, and concerts with one of the four choral ensembles at UWM.
