AND Mozart String Quintet in D Major\, K. 593 (1790) — The most intellectually rigorous of the six\, leaner and more concentrated than its predecessors. Listen for the stately opening that keeps returning like a philosophical refrain\, and a slow movement that ends with what one reviewer called “a sad smile.” \n\n\n\nProgramGuest Violist\, Hartmut RohdeLudwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) – String Quartet in G Major\, Op. 18\, No. 2Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) – String Quintet in D Major\, KV 593 \n\n\n\nCelebrating 80 Years – Full Festival Lineup\n\n\n\nPre-talks begin one hour prior to each program (except May 19) \n\n\n\nSunday\, May 17 at 3:00 PM – Guest Violist\, Hartmut RohdeUWM Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, 2419 E. AND Mozart String Quintet in E-flat Major\, K. 614 (1791) — Mozart’s last chamber work\, yet utterly free of valediction — just open-air good humor and Haydnesque mischief. \n\n\n\nProgramGuest Violist\, Razvan Popovici Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) – String Quartet in B-Flat Major\, Op. 18\, No. 6Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) – String Quintet in E-Flat Major\, KV 614 \n\n\n\nCelebrating 80 Years – Full Festival Lineup\n\n\n\nPre-talks begin one hour prior to each program (except May 19) \n\n\n\nSunday\, May 17 at 3:00 PM – Guest Violist\, Hartmut RohdeUWM Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, 2419 E. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeThursday\, May 28\, 2026 (7:30–9 p.m.)Pre-talk (6:30 p.m.) \n\n\n\n\n\nLocationMusic Building\, Recital Hall \n\n\n\n\n\nThe quartet will perform an ambitious FREE series in May of twelve masterworks over six concerts\, including on May 28: Beethoven String Quartet No. 3 in D Major — The gentlest and most lyrical of the six quartets transforms completely in its finale\, a blazing Presto that hijacks the entire work and then\, at the last possible moment\, dissolves into a teasing whisper rather than the expected triumphant close. AND Mozart String Quintet in C Minor\, K. 406 (1787) — The odd one out: a transcription of a wind serenade\, startlingly dark for the genre. The highlight is a minuet built on a mirror canon that Erik Smith described as “two swans reflected in still water.” \n\n\n\nProgramGuest Violist\, Razvan Popovici Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) – String Quartet in D Major\, Op. 18\, No. 3Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) – String Quintet in C Minor\, KV 406 \n\n\n\nCelebrating 80 Years – Full Festival Lineup\n\n\n\nPre-talks begin one hour prior to each program (except May 19) \n\n\n\nSunday\, May 17 at 3:00 PM – Guest Violist\, Hartmut RohdeUWM Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, 2419 E. Listen for the slow movement’s volcanic emotional outbursts\, inspired by the tomb scene from Romeo and Juliet. AND Mozart String Quintet in G Minor\, K. 516 (1787) — The emotional dark twin of K. 515\, one of the most searching explorations of grief in all chamber music. The muted slow movement and the finale’s hard-won turn toward happiness are unforgettable. \n\n\n\nProgramGuest Violist\, Razvan PopoviciLudwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) – String Quartet in F Major\, Op. 18\, No. 1Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) – String Quintet in G Minor\, KV 516 \n\n\n\nCelebrating 80 Years – Full Festival Lineup\n\n\n\nPre-talks begin one hour prior to each program (except May 19) \n\n\n\nSunday\, May 17 at 3:00 PM – Guest Violist\, Hartmut RohdeUWM Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, 2419 E.
