This program will highlight Spavelko’s art song cycle Baby Book\, a deeply expressive set of six songs exploring themes of pregnancy and miscarriage\, and possibly include excerpts of other recent compositions depending on availability and programming. \nDr. Jessica Spafford is a coloratura soprano recognized for her versatility across concert\, recital\, and new music repertoire. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeFriday\, April 10\, 2026 (7:30–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationZelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, Bader Hall \n\n\nMozart · Bartók · Schubert · Larsson\nFeaturing Dana Sherman\, horn \nThe UWM Symphony Orchestra performs on April 10 in Bader Concert Hall in a program featuring Dana Sherman\, Professor of Horn\, as soloist in Larsson’s Horn Concerto under the direction of Dr. Jun Kim. Additional works include Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute\, Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances\, and Schubert’s Symphony No. 8\, Unfinished\, conducted by Jeong In Kim. \nThe performance also serves as the Graduate Conducting Recital of Jeong In Kim\, presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Music in Conducting. \nUWM’s Symphony Orchestra is comprised of graduate and undergraduate music majors\, as well as other students. The ensemble presents seven to eight concerts each year and regularly collaborates with UWM Choirs and Opera Theatre.  \nThe orchestra has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Chicago Symphony Center\, and the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It was selected as one of two orchestras to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Los Angeles and has appeared at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Conference. Drawn from the evocative paintings of Edward Hopper\, Later the Same Evening transforms still images into intimate\, overlapping human stories set in mid-century New York. Composed by John Musto with a libretto by Mark Campbell\, this American chamber opera has earned national and international recognition for its cinematic structure\, lyrical score\, and deeply human storytelling.  \nSince its premiere at the University of Maryland’s Opera Studio\, Later the Same Evening has been produced by leading institutions including Wolf Trap Opera\, Glimmerglass Opera\, Pittsburgh Opera\, Curtis Institute of Music\, Manhattan School of Music\, and Juilliard School\, among others. Its continued presence on major stages speaks to its unique ability to bridge visual art\, music\, and drama in a way that feels both timeless and immediate. \nWe are especially proud to welcome director Doug Clemons\, a dynamic force in the Milwaukee arts scene. She holds a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Western Washington University and an MFA with a Certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Arizona. Her work has been recognized through awards and residencies\, including an invited residency at Musée Niépce\, France. Her mid-career exhibition The Intimate Infinite featured nine bodies of work and debuted These Grand Places. Through practical tips and real-world insight\, students will explore animation workflows\, professional expectations\, and strategies for navigating freelance and studio environments. The session also centers on finding and refining your artistic voice—balancing personal expression with industry demands—while offering guidance on portfolios\, networking\, and post-graduation next steps for launching a career in animation. \nRodney Lambright II is an artist and creative. He specializes in conceiving a diverse range of work that centers story through illustration\, animation\, design\, and directing. His experience in the design and animation industry has led him to work with a range of clients\, from Airbnb\, Apple\, Google\, and PBS\, to name a few. \nRodney’s artistic style has been influenced by the likes of Christopher Nolan\, Satoshi Kon\, and Sampha. His works explore themes of Afro-futurism\, and the psychologically mystical aspects of the human experience. He flocks to opportunities that allow his art to connect people to big ideas\, while also investigating the balance between innovation and sustainability. He is currently a Senior Designer at BUCK Design \nSpecial Features is an art and film focused professional development workshop series curated by the Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \n \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.

She has exhibited her prints\, books\, and video animations in solo and group shows throughout the United States and abroad and has worked as an artist-in-residence at Elsewhere Artists Collaborative\, Iowa Lakeside Laboratory\, Montello Foundation\, and Ucross Foundation\, among others. Brinich-Langlois’ is Teaching Faculty in Printmaking & Book Arts at UW-Milwaukee. \nThroughout the fall and spring semesters\, the Artists Now! Guest Lecture Series welcomes a diverse group of nationally and internationally recognized artists working across traditional\, hybrid and emergent disciplines. The dances in this program honor the enduring human impulse to take up space\, put down roots\, and rise. This evening features new works by guest artist Karlies Kelley\, and dance faculty Daniel Burkholder\, Tiffany Kadani\, Dan Schuchart\, and Christal Wagner. \nThe works spanning this evening move between the personal and the political\, the historical and the deeply felt. Choreographers draw on stories of marginalized communities celebrating their right to exist\, of neighborhoods razed and rebuilt through resistance\, of generational trauma transformed in the body\, and of individual journeys shaped by what we choose to carry — and what we leave behind. Across every work\, a common pulse beats: the insistence on blooming\, even in unlikely soil. \n \n\nThe bar is open!
