Fluttering by\, attention pulls focus from the movement of the cloud\, to the movement of the wind\, to the movement of the eye\, to the movement of the mind\, without ever moving an inch. All the while\, we’re watching seeing\, or observing looking\, or something like that. A program of short works that explore place\, space and the weather\, in all its sublime\, mundane and chaotic glory.  \n \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeWednesday\, February 4\, 2026 (7:30–9 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationVirtual \n\n\nLinda Fleming (born in 1945 in Pittsburgh\, PA) is a celebrated sculptor and educator. For Fleming\, location is vital to her in creating artwork\, and as a result\, the artist divides her time between three studios. Her first studio (a 40-foot geodesic dome) is located in Colorado at Libre – an artist’s community that was founded in 1968. Fleming’s second studio is at Wall Spring in the Smoke Creek Desert in northwestern Nevada\, and the third\, The Brewery is in Benicia\, CA where Fleming assembles most of her large-scale works. \nThroughout the fall and spring semesters\, the Artists Now! Guest Lecture Series welcomes a diverse group of nationally and internationally recognized artists working across traditional\, hybrid and emergent disciplines. This evening features new works by dance faculty Mair Culbreth\, Ishmael Konney\, Dawn Springer\, and a premiere work by acclaimed choreographer and special guest artist David Roussève. \nRoussève partnered with UWM Dance and community partners Diverse & Resilient and local dancers to create his work “Care\,” which serves as the final stage of Roussève’s dance and community project\, Care: Illuminating Milwaukee’s Queer and Trans Communities. Roussève’s piece features three local ballroom dancers who collaborated with him on the crucial vogue and ballroom section of the work. Designed for emerging filmmakers\, the workshop demystifies the role of the cinematographer and equips attendees with actionable knowledge they can apply immediately—whether on student sets or professional productions.  \nKathryn Boyd-Batstone is a Los Angeles-based\, Local 600 cinematographer whose work has been recognized by Sundance Collab’s Cultural Impact Residency\, the DGA Student Film Awards\, the ASC Student Heritage Awards\, and the Caucus Foundation Gold Circle Awards. She is an 2025 ASC Vision Mentee. Fathead\, the first-ever film shot on Amazon’s 260-degree XR stage\, is a Cannes Emerging Filmmaker Gold winner and an NAACP Image Award nominee. Her shot For Rosa\, premiered on HBO Max. Kathryn has lensed two feature films and shot branded content for eBay\, DoorDash\, and Disney. Participants have the chance to learn and grow as both soloists and choral artists. \nOverview\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRehearse and perform with the Vocal Arts Festival Honor Choir\, including a final performance in UWM’s Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts.\nWork on a prepared solo with UWM voice faculty and guest artists in a masterclass or mini-lesson (accompanist provided).\nAttend classes and interest sessions on topics related to vocal performance.\nAttend performances of opera and musical theater scenes\, choral music\, and vocal solos given by UWM faculty and students.\n\n\n\nStudent Applications\n \n\nStudents from over 50 high schools annually apply to participate\, and 120 are chosen from 200+ applicants. Applications closed November 7\, but final participants have not yet been chosen. Students still interested in applying should email Dr. Zack Durlam at durlam@uwm.edu for an application link.\n\n\nTeachers may nominate as many students as they wish by providing students with a link to the student application form. Once a student fills out the application\, including nominating teacher’s email\, the teacher will receive a link to verify the student’s information along with a few other fields. \nThe festival is limited to 120 students\, so only the most qualified nominees will be selected for participation. Please nominate only accomplished singers who are strong musicians and will have a prepared classical solo to perform during the festival.  \n\nStudent Application Form\n\nCost & Repertoire\n$75 per accepted student. Cost includes all rehearsals\, vocal sessions\, voice masterclasses and lessons\, performances\, accompanists\, parking\, music (on loan)\, and three meals. Scholarships are available to students in. Lodging is not included. \nThe honor choir will perform four selections. Three will be mailed to accepted students in advance. Singers are asked to prepare their voice part on these pieces before arriving. Local monuments to past tornadoes intertwine with mythologies of settlement and displacement. An amateur storm chaser questions his own agency and fate. The CEO of a Wizard of Oz-themed storm shelter company describes a growing market in a world of increasing weather uncertainty. Unfolding episodically\, questions of memory\, inequality\, colonization\, climate change\, and disaster capitalism arise as the film examines legacies of weather within the region colloquially known as “tornado alley.”  \nCurtis Miller is a filmmaker and artist based in Chicago\, IL. His work often takes the American Midwest as both site and subject. His films have screened internationally at Visions du Réel\, IDFA\, DMZ Docs\, Glasgow Short Film Festival\, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival\, Antimatter\, EXiS\, and the Chicago International Film Festival\, as well as the Hyde Park Arts Center\, Gallery 400\, and the Renaissance Society\, among others. In 2025\, he was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” A Brief History of Chasing Storms is Miller’s first feature. \nThe artist will be present for a Q&A after the program. \nA Brief History of Chasing Storms directed by Curtis Miller 70 minutes\, 2025\, 16mm & 4K video \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.

His work has been exhibited in group shows at the Studio Museum in Harlem\, New York\, New Museum\, New York\, Museum of Modern Art\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. She has completed residencies at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and the Baltimore Jewelry Center\, where she is currently a Teaching Fellow. Outside of the studio\, Diamond is an advocate for Black people in the fields of craft and academia and works to help achieve equity and accessibility within those fields. \nThroughout the fall and spring semesters\, the Artists Now! Guest Lecture Series welcomes a diverse group of nationally and internationally recognized artists working across traditional\, hybrid and emergent disciplines. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeThursday\, February 26\, 2026 (6:30–8:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationMitchell Hall\, Fine Arts Cinema Room B91 \n\n\nThis workshop explores documentary filmmaking as a tool for community advocacy and social impact. Attendees will examine how nonfiction stories can amplify marginalized voices\, engage local communities\, and move audiences toward awareness and action. Through case studies and practical discussion\, the workshop addresses ethical storytelling\, relationship-building with participants\, and strategies for designing films with impact beyond the screen—equipping emerging filmmakers to tell responsible\, community-centered stories that matter.  \nOur guest\, Eric Kleppe-Montenegro is interested in challenging dominant narratives about marginalized communities and highlighting change-makers through storytelling. Growing up as a Colombian-American helped him understand the damage of pervasive stereotypes commonly reproduced in film and television. He also recognizes the true beauty that is left out of narrow perspectives\, a beauty which should be celebrated. Eric is passionate about creating impactful art that uplifts and inspires viewers. This passion led him to documenting social justice movements for the last decade\, specifically within the immigrant rights movement\, and allowed him to collaborate with creatives across lines of difference. \nSpecial Features is an art and film focused professional development workshop series curated by the Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \n \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.

SUMMARY:UWM Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition Winner's Concert
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeFriday\, February 27\, 2026 (7:30–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationZelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, Bader Hall \n\n\nThe UWM Symphony Orchestra concert\, conducted by Dr. Jun Kim\, will feature soprano Lexi Smith and hornist Evan Goodson\, winners of the 2025-26 UWM Concerto Competition\, in performances of two iconic works by Richard Strauss. Smith will sing Strauss’s transcendent Four Last Songs\, one of the most beloved masterpieces of the vocal-orchestral repertoire\, while Goodson will perform the composer’s virtuosic Horn Concerto No. 1\, a brilliant work that highlights both lyrical elegance and technical brilliance. The program also includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4\, a luminous and joyful work filled with warmth\, wit\, and classical grace. Often described as one of Beethoven’s most radiant symphonies\, it brings energy\, elegance\, and vitality to a program that spans late-Romantic lyricism and Classical brilliance. \nUWM’s Symphony Orchestra is comprised of graduate and undergraduate music majors\, as well as other students. The ensemble presents seven to eight concerts each year and regularly collaborates with UWM Choirs and Opera Theatre.  \nThe orchestra has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Chicago Symphony Center\, and the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It was selected as one of two orchestras to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Los Angeles and has appeared at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Conference.
