SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: Ken Jacobs — Looking Forward to a World without Money
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeTuesday\, November 4\, 2025 (8–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\n\n\n\nLocationUWM Union Cinema \n\n\n\n\n\nKen Jacobs\, one of the true radicals of American cinema and a lion of experimental film\, passed October 5th\, a mere season since his beloved wife and collaborator Flo preceded him. They lived long\, full\, beautiful lives. In addition to his inimitable work in film\, video\, painting\, performance and all range of moving images\, Ken started and was at the center of the film program at SUNY-Binghamton and co-founded The Millennium Film Workshop. \n\n\n\nOften dense\, visually-mesmerizing and powerfully constructed\, his works engage deeply with visual processes\, our phenomenological experiences of cinema and our considerable possibilities for perceptual dimension. The two works on celluloid—both from our own Cinema Arts Archive!—we’ll be showing this evening are true masterworks of found/appropriative/collage-brative film: Blond Cobra is made from two abandoned works by his friends\, artists Bob Fleischner and Jack Smith\, combined into a shimmering and lush film with a series of Brechtian disruptions and indeterminacies; Perfect Film is a “record of events literally preserved as found from the curving room floor; carelessly strung on a reel [and] and bought for $5 on Canal Street” depicting\, demonstrating and becoming media in the immediate aftermath of the murder of Malcom X. In addition to these canonical works\, we’ll be featuring digital works from this century\, during which he continued to make mind-eye-boggling and spirited art that feels as fresh\, as daring and as radical as anything he made over seventy years of filmmaking. \n\n\n\nNote: these works often stroboscopic and flickering images. \n\n\n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.

SUMMARY:Worlds Within: Midwestern Microcultures Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeNovember 6–20\, 2025Wednesday–Fridays (2–7 p.m.)\, Saturdays (11 a.m.–3 p.m.)Reception: Thursday\, November 13 (4–6 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationKenilworth Square East\, 3rd Floor Gallery \n\n\nWorlds Within: Midwestern Microcultures is a photography exhibition curated by Peck School of the Arts Advanced Photography Students currently enrolled in ART 452: Contemporary Issues in Photography. \nWe invite photographers to submit work for Worlds Within: Midwestern Microcultures\, an exhibition exploring the rich diversity of communities\, traditions\, and shared identities that shape life in the Midwest.  \nA microculture can be defined as a smaller\, distinct cultural group that exists within a larger community. These groups often form around shared values\, traditions\, movements\, or ways of life. From grassroots organizations and neighborhood gatherings to family traditions and personal rituals\, microcultures reveal the deeper layers of belonging and connection that often go unnoticed.   \nWe encourage you to consider: How do you best represent your microculture? What objects\, symbols\, or moments speak to the heart of your community? This exhibition seeks to highlight the unique and overlapping microcultures that make the Midwest a region of depth\, resilience\, and complexity.

DESCRIPTION:Dates\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, November 13\, 2025 (6:30–8 p.m.)\nMitchell Hall\, Fine Arts Cinema Room B91\n\n\n\n\nThe heart and soul of many film productions lie within the Art & Production Design departments. From set design\, to costuming to props\, these departments allow for other worlds to be introduced\, sustained and transported in any film. If you interested in art and production design departments\, this Special Features is for you! \nKara Mulrooney is an art-driven filmmaker\, actor\, and educator based in the Midwest. SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: From the Archives
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeTuesday\, November 18\, 2025 (7–9 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationUWM Union Cinema \n\n\nCurated by MFA candidates from the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation and New Genres\, these programs feature a unique opportunity to see some of the incredible 16mm prints from the UWM Cinema Arts Archive. For each program\, the curator is invited to program a selection of films around a theme of their choosing. \nThe Cinema Arts Archive now contains over 400 essential works on 16mm film\, and a handful on 35mm\, from a range of historic and contemporary cinema. This unique and expansive archive continues to preserve\, grow\, and reflect the ever-evolving landscape of avant-garde film—representing a commitment to the past\, present\, and future of the medium. Alongside giants like Hollis Frampton\, Bruce Baillie\, Deborah Stratman\, and Jennifer Reeves lie many lesser-known gems ready to ignite curiosity and expand minds. While the collection aims to capture an array of crucial cinematic history\, modes\, and movements\, the majority of work is artist-made\, short form\, and experimental in nature. \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video.
