SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: Beatrice Gibson
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, March 4\, 2025 (7–9 p.m.)\nUWM Union Cinema\n\n\n\n\nResolutely feminist in form and content\, Gibson’s films explore the personal and the political and draw on cult figures from experimental literature and poetry – from Kathy Acker to Gertrude Stein. Collapsing fiction and documentary\, and liquefying both\, they range from experimental autobiography to nocturnal thriller and cast friends and influences as their characters and co-creators. Collaboration and credit are at their heart. \nGibson is twice winner of The Tiger Award for Best Short Film Rotterdam International Film Festival\, (2009 and 2013). She was the winner of the 17th Baloise Art Prize\,Art Basel. She has been twice shortlisted for the The Jarman Award (2013 and 2019). In 2013 she was one of four artists shortlisted for the Max Mara Art Prize for Women.  \nGibson has recently had recent solo exhibitions at Ordet\, Milano (2023) Camden Arts Centre\, London\, Bergen Kunsthall\, Bergen Mercer Union\, Toronto (2019) and Julia Stoschek Collection / KW Institute for Contemporary Art\, Berlin\, (2018). Her films have shown at film festivals around the word\, including Cannes at New York Film Festival\, Toronto International Film Festival\, London Film Festival\, Courtisane Film Festival\, Punto De Vista International Documentary Film Festival and many more. A complete retrospective of Gibson’s films was screened at Fondazione Prada\, in December 2023.  \nGibson is currently developing her first feature with BBC films\, a love story\, set during the course of one night\, inspired by Kathy Acker’s Don Quixote and Alice Notley’s The Descent of Alette.   \nGibson is a also founding member of the monthly cinema club The Machine that Kills Bad People at the Institute of Contemporary Art\, London\, alongside Ben Rivers\, Maria Palacios Cruz and Erika Balsom. In 2021 she founded Nuova Orfeo a collectively run\, roving initiative for experimental film and performance in Palermo\, Sicily.  \nGibson’s films are distributed by LUX\, London.  \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.

UWM faculty and guests will perform works including Henriette Renié Trio for harp\, violin and cello\, Rebecca Clarke Sonata for viola and piano\, Adrienne Albert Doppler Effect for flute\, viola and harp and sarah Kirland Snider You a re Free for flute\, clarinet\, marimba\, violin and cello. \nFounded in 2001 and based at UWM\, Chamber Music Milwaukee has collaborated with many of today’s most exciting and important performers and composers. The series presents thematic programming that introduces innovative concert formats while exploring a broad diversity of repertoire. From the Archives is an ongoing series curated by MFA candidates in the UWM Film Department. The curator is invited to program a selection of films around a theme of their choosing from the remarkable Cinema Arts Archive collection\, which contains over 400 essential works from the history of experimental cinema. \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.

DESCRIPTION:DatesWednesday\, March 26\, 2025 (7:00–8:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationMusic Building\, Recital Hall 175 \n\n\nJoin renowned dance scholar Ann Cooper Albright for a performance/reading of her newest book\, Simone Forti: improvising a life. \nA dancer\, scholar\, and a 2019-2020 John Simon Memorial Guggenheim fellow\, Ann Cooper Albright is professor in the Department of Dance at Oberlin College. Simone Forti: improvising a life is her latest book. She is also co-editor\, with David Gere\, of Taken by Surprise: Improvisation in Dance and Mind. She is a veteran practitioner of Contact Improvisation\, has taught workshops internationally\, and facilitated Critical Mass: CI @ 50 which brought 300 dancers to Oberlin from across the world to learn\, talk\, and dance together in celebration of the 50th anniversary of this extraordinary form. Encounters with Contact Improvisation is the product of one of her adventures in writing and dancing and dancing and writing with others\, as is the new collection Resistance and Support: Contact Improvisation @ 50. \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.

Color grading and correction can make or break a project\, understanding the mood and tone of your film is imperative for pushing your creative boundaries. Join us for an immersive workshop on building the look of your film through color. \nKin Marie is a Chicago-based art director\, filmmaker\, photographer and archivist. Her artistic practice currently focuses on the Afrofuturism movement and how this ideology can serve as a blueprint for cultural growth as well as actively contribute to its targeted communities.
