DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, February 4\, 2025 (7–9 p.m.)\nUWM Union Cinema\n\n\n\n\n \nPeter Rose’s films\, performances\, and installations delve into the nature of time\, space\, and perception\, drawing on his background in mathematics and structuralist cinema. With a keen interest in language as both form and concept\, his work explores concrete texts\, political satire\, and the absurd. Exhibited globally at MoMA\, the Whitney Biennial\, and Centre Pompidou\, Rose’s art reimagines the boundaries of media and thought. \n \nSince 1968 Peter Rose has made over forty films\, tapes\, performances and installations. Many of the early works raise intriguing questions about the nature of time\, space\, light\, and perception and draw upon Rose’s background in mathematics and on the influence of structuralist filmmakers. \n \nHe subsequently became interested in language as a subject and in video as a medium and generated a substantial body of work that played with the feel and form of sense\, concrete texts\, political satire\, oddball performance\, and a kind of intellectual comedy. Recent video installations have involved a return to an examination of landscape\, time\, and vision. \n \nRose has been widely exhibited\, both nationally and internationally\, having been included in shows at the Museum of Modern Art\, the Whitney Biennial\, the Centre Pompidou\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Film Society at Lincoln Center\, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. He has been awarded fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, the Pew Foundation\, the Independence Foundation\, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, and is fond of writing descriptions in the third person.  \n \nFilmmaker in attendance!  \n \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.

She moved to the United States at age 18 carrying her entire life in one suitcase that weighed 20 lbs. She is currently Professor of Art at Truman State University in Kirksville\, Missouri. Stephenson’s “The Storyteller\,” an homage to long-time Chicago Symphony Orchestra Principal Trumpet Adolph “Bud” Herseth (1921-2013). I’m interested in the world around me. The stuff of everyday life.” Raised in Maine and based in NYC\, Wilkins creates moving image works combining conceptual rigor\, uncanny observations\, and bone-dry wit. From public hearings to mysterious videotapes\, his work launches meditations on images\, race\, Hollywood\, and life under late capitalism.  \nA downloadable PDF of a public hearing in Alleghany\, New York; a mysterious videotape that becomes the center of a detective yarn; reflections on the history of the toxic Androscoggin River; or 35mm publicity stills scoured from movie studio press kits… in Wilkins’s able hands these things act as launching pads for freewheeling\, rhizomatic meditations on the photographed image\, representations of race\, the history of Hollywood\, and American life as lived under late capitalism. A curated selection of the work to date of an enormously original and utterly unclassifiable talent.  \nFilmmaker in attendance!  \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.

Through a series of loosely-related improvised scenarios with non-actors from Fairfield\, the film explores the tensions\, humor\, and pathos woven into this community’s social fabric.
