DESCRIPTION:Dates & TimeLocationApril 8\, 10\, 15\, 17 (10 am.–3 p.m.)April 12\, Reception (5–7:30 p.m.)April 20 (12–3 p.m.)Theatre Building\, Arts Center Gallery\n\n\n\nThe Cross Connections 2024 International Exhibition and Competition of Visual Communication Design and Emerging Media Design is a global event that showcases the creative works of students and faculty from over ten higher education institutions worldwide.  \n\n\n\nThis collaborative exhibition will feature approximately 120 artworks encompassing a wide range of visual art forms\, including print-based visual communication design\, screen-based video and animation\, and user-centered design across both traditional and emerging media. The exhibition aims to transcend borders\, cultures\, concepts\, media\, and disciplines\, offering a captivating fusion of contemporary visual communication designs and emerging trends. An expert panel of judges will evaluate the selected artworks for the international exhibition and competition\, which will then be displayed in institutions worldwide in Spring of 2024.

Described as creating “zones of compression and dispersion\,” her work utilizes strategies of montage and recirculation\, inviting an affective response while simultaneously measuring our capacity to know what we encounter. SUMMARY:Moving Between Tongues: Choreographing Translation
DESCRIPTION:Dates\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nApril 14\, 2024 (4–5:30 p.m.)\nMitchell Hall\, Studio 254\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Dance Student Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) Lia Smith-Redmann\, Libby Steckmesser\, and Rae Zimmerli collaborate with faculty mentor Maria Gillespie to present an informal showing of their choreographic research.  Moving Between Tongues developed from choreographic research exploring meaning making in the pre and post lingual forms of dance. The dancers share the products of their aesthetic practice as a nexus in which auto-ethnography\, embodied storytelling\, and interdisciplinary performance practice reveal how translation is an embodied and ongoing practice. \nAn informal panel discussion on the creative process\, methods of translation\, and collaboration will follow the performance. \nMusic performances by Barry Paul Clark and Xylia Sophia-Conn.  \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event. \n\n\n \n\nView Program PDF

DESCRIPTION:Dates\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nApril 14\, 2024 (7:30–9 p.m.)\nZelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, Room 250\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a collection of Jazz performances featuring Mitch Towne on Jazz Organ.  \nThe 18-member UWM Jazz Ensemble performs music written or arranged specifically for a large jazz orchestra. The repertoire includes music from Duke Ellington and Count Basie as well as contemporary composers such as Maria Schneider\, Tom Matta and Bob Mintzer. \nThe UWM Afro-Caribbean Jazz Orchestra was formed in the Fall of 2021 to focus on the Latin and Afro-Cuban influences in jazz. SUMMARY:Chamber Music Milwaukee Presents Across the Grain: A Bassoon & Percussion Duo Recital
DESCRIPTION:Date & Time\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nApril 15\, 2024 (7:30–9 p.m.)\nMusic Building\, Recital Hall 175\, and Virtual\n\n\n\n\nChamber Music Milwaukee will present Across the Grain\, a program of works that explore the sound possibilities for bassoon and percussion. All pieces on the program are contemporary and have been written within the last 15 years. \nFounded in 2001 and based at UWM\, Chamber Music Milwaukee has collaborated with many of today’s most exciting and important performers and composers. The series presents thematic programming that introduces innovative concert formats while exploring a broad diversity of repertoire. Featuring UWM music faculty and guest artists\, the season typically presents five unique concerts. Join us as we engage with artists in imaginative and interactive experiences through ensemble performances and education. \n \nDr. Susan Nelson is the Associate Professor of Bassoon and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Bowling Green State University (BGSU)\, Ohio\, and enjoys an active career as a performer\, teacher\, and clinician. Dr. Nelson is an advocate for new music as well as chamber music for the bassoon\, and is the Director of the non-profit organization Bassoon Chamber Music Composition Competition (BCMCC). She has also taught bassoon and theory at Stephen F. Austin State University and played with the Stone Fort Wind Quintet in Nacogdoches\, Texas. In the summer Dr. Nelson teaches at various camps\, including BGSU’s Double Reed Camp and The Renova Festival. She has performed with the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt\, Austria\, Michigan Opera Theatre\, Shreveport Symphony Orchestra\, Toledo Symphony Orchestra\, Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra\, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra\, Adrian Symphony Orchestra\, and Helena Symphony\, among others. She has also given performances at the International Double Reed Society Conferences in Redlands (CA)\, Oxford (OH)\, New York\, Appleton (WI)\, Tokyo (Japan)\, Boulder (CO)\, and at Mahidol University in Thailand. Dr. Nelson taught at both Adrian (MI) and Heidelberg (OH) Colleges and was a member of the Heidelberg faculty wind quintet. She also held the position of principal bassoon in the Great Falls Symphony and was a member of the Chinook Winds quintet in Great Falls\, Montana. She can be heard on “Elements\,” a CD release from the BCMCC through the MSR Classics label which features the winning works from the 2012 and 2014 BCMCC competitions. Dr. Nelson is a graduate of the University of Kansas\, the University of Oklahoma\, and the University of Michigan. Her primary teachers include Jeffrey Lyman\, Carl Rath\, and Alan Hawkins\, and she is a Fox artist. \nDr. Colin McCall is a percussionist\, collaborator\, and photographer currently based out of Ann Arbor\, MI. His goal as a musician is to find ways to present both complex and accessible percussion music in mediums which connect with audiences on a basic\, human level. Through use of audience participation\, original compositions\, and multimedia components\, he strives to develop a fresh and engaging performance style. Colin has seen success in several competitions\, most recently being named the winner of both the Black Swamp Multi Percussion Competition and the Atlanta Symphony Modern Snare Drum Competition. He also participated in the renowned TROMP International Percussion Competition\, and was a semi-finalist in the Northwestern Percussion Competition. As a videographer and collaborator\, Colin has partnered with the Virginia Technical University Percussion Ensemble\, Harvard Ballet Company\, University of Missouri Percussion Ensemble\, and Chautauqua Institution Theatre Company. Colin holds doctoral and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan\, where he worked under the tutelage of Joseph Gramley and Jonathan Ovalle. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the Eastman School of Music\, where he studied with Michael Burritt. DESCRIPTION:Dates\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nApril 16\, 2024 (7–9 p.m.)\nUWM Union Cinema\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of short films by Parastoo Anoushahpour and stay for a Q&A after the screening.  \nAnoushahpour is an Iranian artist based in Toronto with a moving image practice working predominantly with video and installation. Her work explores the tension of multiple subjectivities as a strategy to address the power inherent in narrative structures. SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: Three Films by Kevin Jerome Everson
DESCRIPTION:Dates\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nApril 30\, 2024 (7–8:30 p.m.)\nUWM Union Cinema\n\n\n\n\nThis screening will serve as a prelude to Kevin Jerome Everson’s on-campus visit the following Friday and Saturday. The program will feature two medium-length films\, Ten Five in the Grass and Company Line\, as well as one short film\, Undefeated. \nKevin Jerome Everson currently lives and works in Charlottesville\, Virginia where he is a Professor of Art at the University of Virginia. Everson has made nine feature films and over 130 short films\, which have been exhibited internationally at film festivals including Sundance\, Toronto\, Venice\, Rotterdam\, Berlin\, London\, Ann Arbor and Oberhausen. Everson has been the subject of mid-career retrospectives at Modern and Contemporary Art Museum\, Seoul\, 2017; Viennale\,2014; Visions du Reel\, Nyon\, 2012; The Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, 2011; and Centre Pompidou\, Paris\, 2009. His work has been featured at the 2008\, 2012 and 2017 Whitney Biennials and the 2013 Sharjah Biennial.  \nEverson’s visit is made possible through the collaborative work of Short Ends Film Journal\, the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and the Union Cinema.  \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.\n\n\n \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.
