Her interdisciplinary practice as an artist and filmmaker is deeply interested in telling stories that reflect the double-consciousness of African American history\, identity\, memory & forced forgetting. This creative body of work and research has joined these themes and found form in videos\, photographic essays\, field recordings\, ephemeral installations and site-specific performances. \nThe Spring of 2026 marked her final semester as a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Peck School of The Arts: Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres. Tuesday brings a retrospective sampling of Professor Cobb’s work while the following evening features an archival look at the incredible work she made with Milwaukee youth as part of the Community Media Project. \nBoth evenings will feature Professor Cobb in person! \n \n\nExperimental Tuesdays is a free public series featuring celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. This weekly series presents films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. It also amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations\, such as LGBT\, Native American\, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation & New Genres\, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema\, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Recent screenings include Silvia das Fadas\, Courtney Stephens\, Simon Liu\, Helena Wittman\, Jessica Bardsley\, Suneil Sanzgiri\, Mary Helena Clark\, Angelo Madsen\, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few.

DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeThursday\, December 3\, 2026 (7:30–9 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationKenilworth Square East\, Jan Serr Studio \n\n\nJoin us for an evening of jazz featuring the UWM Jazz Ensemble\, the UWM Afro-Caribbean Jazz Orchestra and the UWM Youth Jazz Ensemble (UJAY).  \nThe UWM Jazz Ensemble focuses on styles from the Swing Era through contemporary composers. The ensemble is open to all UWM undergraduate and graduate music majors\, as well as non-music major students.  \nThe UWM Afro-Caribbean Jazz Orchestra features a Latin percussion section\, horns\, and vocalists. It performs music by composers such as Tito Puente\, Ray Barretto\, Sonoro Poncena\, Evan Linns\, and more. The ensemble was formed in the Fall of 2021 to focus on Afro–Caribbean jazz-influenced music.  \nThe UWM Youth Jazz Ensemble (UJAY) is a big band that prepares both classic and modern big band charts in weekly rehearsals during the academic year.  \n \n\nThe bar is open! At least 500 pieces of unique jewelry\, sometimes outrageous in design\, will be available for purchase. \nEach student is responsible for the fabrication of 20-30 pieces including rings\, pendants\, brooches\, earrings\, etc. Using materials that range from silver and gold to nontraditional materials such as concrete and rubber\, students create jewelry with an exciting twist. All the work will be available for sale to benefit the individual artists as well as Object\, a student-run Jewelry & Metalsmithing organization. Be sure to mark your calendar!

The ensemble presents seven to eight concerts each year and regularly collaborates with UWM Choirs and Opera Theatre.  \nThe orchestra has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Chicago Symphony Center\, and the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It was selected as one of two orchestras to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Los Angeles and has appeared at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Conference. Artist-faculty from UW-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts lead rehearsals and performances. They work closely with other members of the university’s vibrant performing arts community to help student musicians further their skills by learning and performing in the university setting. Band directors and private teachers throughout southeastern Wisconsin provide additional instructional support. Participants have the chance to learn and grow as both soloists and choral artists. \nOverview\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRehearse and perform with the Vocal Arts Festival Honor Choir\, including a final performance in UWM’s Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts.\nWork on a prepared solo with UWM voice faculty and guest artists in a masterclass or mini-lesson (accompanist provided).\nAttend classes and interest sessions on topics related to vocal performance including musical theatre masterclasses.\nAttend performances of choral music and classical\, musical theatre\, and commercial music solos by UWM students.\n\n\n\nStudent Applications\nAny high school singer may apply\, and teachers may nominate as many students as they wish by providing students with a link to the student application form. Once a student fills out the application\, including nominating teacher’s email\, the teacher will receive a link to verify student information and complete a brief recommendation form. Applications are due by November 3\, and students will be notified of acceptance by November 25. \nThe festival is limited to 120 students\, so only the most qualified nominees will be selected for participation. Teachers are encouraged to nominate accomplished singers who are strong musicians and will have a prepared classical solo to perform during the festival.  \n\nStudent Application Form\n\nCost & Repertoire\n$75 per accepted student. Cost includes all rehearsals\, vocal sessions\, voice masterclasses and lessons\, performances\, accompanists\, parking\, music (on loan)\, and three meals. Scholarships are available to students in need. Lodging is not included. \nThe honor choir will perform four selections. Three will be sent to accepted students in advance. Singers are asked to prepare their voice part on these pieces before arriving. He was the head of the Fiber Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art from 1970 to 1997 and served as the director from 1997 to 2007. His work has gained international recognition and has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Japan-American Friendship Fellowship\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, the James Renwick Alliance\, and the State of Michigan. We’re also thrilled to welcome select high school band students as they sit in with the Wind Ensemble for a side-by-side performance experience with UW–Milwaukee graduate and undergraduate music students. \nThe UWM Wind Ensemble is the premier concert band in the Peck School of the Arts and has been recognized nationally and internationally through numerous invitations to perform at major music conferences. Emphasizing the single performer concept\, the Wind Ensemble uses only players needed for a given piece\, thus providing the greatest exposure for the exceptional musician.  \n \nThe Symphony Band ranks as one of the finest of its kind\, having collaborated with several distinguished composers and performers. The ensemble presents seven to eight concerts each year and regularly collaborates with UWM Choirs and Opera Theatre.  \nThe orchestra has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Chicago Symphony Center\, and the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It was selected as one of two orchestras to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Los Angeles and has appeared at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Conference. Her Craftsbury Trio immerses audiences into a fresh\, natural and vibrant feeling of life in small town USA. The group has appeared at various state and regional conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and National Association for Music Education. The ensemble is open to all UWM undergraduate and graduate music majors\, as well as non-music major students.  \nThe UWM Afro-Caribbean Jazz Orchestra features a Latin percussion section\, horns\, and vocalists. It performs music by composers such as Tito Puente\, Ray Barretto\, Sonoro Poncena\, Evan Linns\, and more. The ensemble was formed in the Fall of 2021 to focus on Afro–Caribbean jazz-influenced music.  \nThe UWM Youth Jazz Ensemble (UJAY) is a big band that prepares both classic and modern big band charts in weekly rehearsals during the academic year.  \n \n\nThe bar is open! With its dynamic instrumentation (soprano\, flute\, clarinet\, violin\, cello\, piano\, and two percussion)\, Khemia’s unique sound world encompasses the presentation of new classical music with a mix of acoustic chamber works\, multimedia\, and multi-genre influences. \nKhemia has been featured in venues and festivals including National Sawdust\, the Wunsch New Music Festival\, Mizzou International Composers Festival\, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art\, and Argentina’s Biennial New Music Festival. Passionate artist educators\, Khemia has held residencies at more than a dozen universities in North and South America. This concert will recognize our graduating students and feature the UWM Concert Chorale. \nThe UWM Wind Ensemble is the premier concert band in the Peck School of the Arts and has been recognized nationally and internationally through numerous invitations to perform at major music conferences. Emphasizing the single performer concept\, the Wind Ensemble uses only players needed for a given piece\, thus providing the greatest exposure for the exceptional musician.  \n \nConcert Chorale is the flagship ensemble of the five-choir choral program at UW-Milwaukee. The choir comprises music majors and non-majors from across campus and performs music from a wide variety of styles\, cultures\, and time periods. Known for their eclectic concert programs\, Chorale embraces a flexible and repertoire-driven approach to tone and style. The group has appeared at various state and regional conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and National Association for Music Education. It performs music by composers such as Tito Puente\, Ray Barretto\, Sonoro Poncena\, Evan Linns\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeThursday\, May 6\, 2027 (7:30–10 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationMusic Building\, Recital Hall \n\n\nBrahms composed two sextets for strings in the 1860s. Though they were composed within five years of each other\, in the same genre of string sextet\, and both in major keys\, they are remarkably different in character with the G major\, Op. 36 having a very ethereal character\, heralding the aura of resignation that haunted his more mature works while the Bb major\, Op. 18 is genial\, warm\, rich\, and bold. \nIn a celebration of Brahms life and compositions\, The Bb Sextet is an appropriate choice since it was Brahms’ first published work for strings. Strings and piano were the backbone of Brahms chamber music output and chamber music was the thread that bound his compositional life together from beginning to end. \nBrahms made a piano four hands arrangement of the variations movement of the Bb Sextet (1860) as a birthday present for Clara Schumann and it is appropriate to celebrate his birthday by beginning the program with this piece. \nThe G major Sextet\, Op. 36 was composed at a time when Brahms’s career was beginning to find an upward trajectory after many doubts as to his ability to succeed well enough to support his first love Clara Schumann and more recently his infatuation with singer Agathe von Siebold. Agathe’s name is cleverly enshrined in the second theme of the first movement A-G-A-H-E (A-G-A-B§-E) \nBoth of these sextets are personal works imbued with all of the qualities that make us love Brahms and we wish all to enjoy his birthday by sharing our appreciation of these beautiful works. \nFounded in 2001 and based at UWM\, Chamber Music Milwaukee has collaborated with many of today’s most exciting and important performers and composers. The series presents thematic programming that introduces innovative concert formats while exploring a broad diversity of repertoire. Featuring UWM music faculty and guest artists\, the season typically presents five unique concerts. DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeFriday\, May 7\, 2027 (7:30–9:30 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationZelazo Center for the Performing Arts\, Bader Hall \n\n\nJoin the UWM Symphony Orchestra for its season finale on May 7 in Bader Concert Hall. \nUWM’s Symphony Orchestra is comprised of graduate and undergraduate music majors\, as well as other students. The ensemble presents seven to eight concerts each year and regularly collaborates with UWM Choirs and Opera Theatre.  \nThe orchestra has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall\, the Chicago Symphony Center\, and the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It was selected as one of two orchestras to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Los Angeles and has appeared at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Conference. Students will be called up by department\, with each department introduced by a selection of work representing their discipline. When your department is standing\, you will be called by name to walk across the stage and receive your stole (a piece of academic regalia\, much like a long scarf\, that you can wear with your cap and gown to the campus-wide Commencement ceremony). After the closing remarks and recessional\, everyone crosses the lobby to Zelazo 280 for a dessert reception. \n\n\nIs the event in-person or virtual?\n\n\nPSOA Convocation is an in-person event\, which will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person. \n\n\nWho should participate?\n\n\nAll Peck School of the Arts students who have graduated or will be graduating by any of the dates listed above along with friends and family of graduating students are welcome to attend. \n\n\nDoes it cost anything?\n\n\nThe event is free. Tickets are not required\, but we do appreciate that you RSVP so we can best plan for your enjoyment. \n\n\nCan I invite my family and friends?\n\n\nDefinitely! You will receive an email invitation to the Peck School of the Arts Graduation Convocation in early April. Richard attended the University at Buffalo\, receiving a BFA in Dance in June 2007. After graduating\, Rich performed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas and upon returning to the States\, danced in several crews for live performances and industrials including for artists such as Flo Rida and The Goo Goo Dolls. Rich has performed\, choreographed\, and toured with several internationally celebrated dance companies including Lehrerdance (dir. Jon Lehrer)\, Chicago Dance Crash (dir. Jessica Deahr)\, Be The Groove (dir. Stephanie Paul) serving as educational director\, and Chicago Tap Theatre (dir. Mark Yonally)\, where he served as a choreographer and rehearsal director. As an educator Rich has been on the faculty of several dance based organizations including Dance Masters of America\, Flow 40 Dance\, Beyond the Stars dance convention\, and Interdanza of Mexico. He has taught classes and courses at the University at Buffalo\, Hope College\, and Salve Regina University. Rich most recently attended the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee\, achieving a Masters of Fine Arts in Dance in May 2021. \n\n\n\n\nGina Laurenzi (Yoga & Jazz)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGina Laurenzi graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a BFA in dance. Before beginning her chapter in Milwaukee\, Gina was awarded a full merit scholarship to train at Giordano Dance Chicago and later performed with Giordano Il and Inside Chicago Dance\, among other Chicago artists. For seven years\, Laurenzi owned and operated Laurenzi Dance (Kenosha\, WI). In her hometown of Kenosha\, Laurenzi presented work regularly and mentored many local artists through the performance groups she founded including; Project Innovate: A Performing Dance Company\, Captivate Dance Company and Momentum Dance Project. Laurenzi has set work on dancers of the UW-Milwaukee Dance Dept.\, Water Street Dance Milwaukee\, Danceworks Youth Performance Company\, Danceworks Performance MKE\, Danceworks Intergenerational Performance Company\, Milwaukee High School of the Arts\, Makaroff Youth Ballet (Appleton\, WI)\, as well as Milwaukee Ballet’s summer intensive and pre-professional program students. Laurenzi works as a teaching artist for both Milwaukee Ballet and Danceworks and is an associate lecturer/teaching assistant at UW-Milwaukee where she is currently pursuing her MA in dance. \n\n\n\n\nDawn Springer (Contemporary)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDawn Springer was fortunate to perform internationally with many wonderful choreographers throughout her training and performance career. Her own choreography has garnered critical acclaim\, and her writing is published in libraries and universities throughout the country. She is a senior lecturer in Dance in the Peck School of the Arts at UWM. BFA\, University of North Carolina School of the Arts\, MFA Hollins University. As a dancer\, she was fortunate to work with a number of choreographers including Helen Simoneau Danse\, Camille A. Brown\, Sara Hook\, and Sarah Skaggs\, among others. Her professional performance career has taken her to many theaters and international festivals including Lincoln Center\, The Kennedy Center\, The Venice Biennale Danza\, The American Dance Festival\, The Baryshnikov Arts Center\, New York Live Arts\, the Brooklyn Museum of Art\, The United States Botanic Garden\, The Banff Center\, Mt Tremper Arts Festival\, Washington D.C.’s Dance Place\, New York City’s Danspace Project\, Dixon Place\, the New York Historical Society\, The Chocolate Factory\, The 92nd St Y\, and Movement Research at the Judson Church. \n\n\n\n\nKarlies Kelley Vedula (Afro-Caribbean Dance)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarlies Kelley Vedula was born and raised in Panama\, and is currently living in Milwaukee\, WI. She has over 15 years of experience performing\, teaching and producing events. She earned her BFA and MFA in African Diaspora Dance from the University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee. Her constant research and passion for dance have molded her into a versatile dancer\, educator\, and choreographer\, ranging from traditional Afro-Latin forms to vernacular Salsa and Modern. She founded Panadanza Dance Company in 2008 as a way to stay connected with her roots\, to build a community around music and dance\, and to create safe\, healing spaces for women and young people. Karlies travels often nationally and internationally to learn and to teach\, and is actively involved in the Milwaukee community\, engaging youth and adults to move in positive and unifying ways. She believes dance belongs to all\, in all spaces\, dance is key to living a more colorful and meaningful life. \n\n\n\n\nCyenthia Vijayakumar (North Indian Classical Dance)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCyenthia Vijayakumar is a Kathak(North Indian Classical Dance) performer\, teacher and choreographer from the Milwaukee area. She  has undergone her training in Lucknow gharana from Guru Murari Sharan Gupta and Guru Hari and Chetna from Bangalore India. She is currently undergoing her training under Guru Sujatha Banerjee from London. She founded Aarambh Kathak Dance School in 2019 in Milwaukee which is the only ISTD (Imperial Society for Teacher of Dance) certified school in WI. She has performed extensively in India and the US across various prestigious platforms. \n\n\n\n\nChristal Wagner (Jazz Dance)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristal Wagner is an Alumna of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee dance department (BFA) where she is also adjunct faculty. She is a screendance artist and has produced work as a cinematographer\, performer\, editor and director for Joe Goode\, Josh Halverson\, Maria Gillespie\, Danceworks Inc\, Milwaukee Dance Theatre Network\, Milwaukee Opera Theatre\, UWM Dance\, The Saint Kate Arts Hotel\, The Cactus Club\, and Li Chiao-Ping Dance where she was a 2020 SEED Creation Fund grant recipient. Christal is the artistic director of Danceworks Performance MKE and has danced for Your Mother Dances\, Gina Laurenzi Dance Project\, Dawn Springer Dance Projects\, Skylight Music Theatre and spent 14 years as a company member with DPMKE. Christal is a cofounder of the music and dance trio Cadance Collective\, co-creating pieces through processes where music and dance are worked on simultaneously through improvisational practices and original soundscapes. In 2020 Christal Wagner became the Saint Kate Art Hotel’s FIRST artist in co-residence. Spend the morning at UW-Milwaukee and get to know our world-class Woodwind\, Brass & Percussion performance faculty! There will be performances\, master classes\, and a mass band experience for all involved! \nHigh school band students will spend the morning watching a performance of the UW-Milwaukee Wind\, Brass\, and Percussion faculty and college students\, receive coachings and masterclasses with UWM faculty\, and participate in a final performance side-by-side with faculty and other high school band students in a large band. No advanced preparation is required as students learn pieces at the event and conclude the morning with all the bands playing together with UWM faculty.
