The event was established in response to student requests and precedes the large UWM Commencement. We encourage you to attend both ceremonies. \n\n\n\nThe convocation ceremony begins with a procession of graduating students into the Bader Concert Hall. Students are seated on stage with the Dean and Department Chairs. There will be an address with opening remarks and all graduates being recognized. Students will be called up by department\, with each department introduced by a selection of work representing their discipline. When your department is standing\, you will be called by name to walk across the stage and receive your stole (a piece of academic regalia\, much like a long scarf\, that you can wear with your cap and gown to the campus-wide Commencement ceremony). After the closing remarks and recessional\, everyone crosses the lobby to Zelazo 280 for a dessert reception. \n\n\n\n\nIs the event in-person or virtual?\nPSOA Convocation is an in-person event\, which will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person. \n\n\n\n\nWho should participate?\nAll Peck School of the Arts students who have graduated or will be graduating by any of the dates listed above along with friends and family of graduating students are welcome to attend. \n\n\n\n\nDoes it cost anything?\nThe event is free. Tickets are not required\, but we do appreciate that you RSVP so we can best plan for your enjoyment. \n\n\n\n\nCan I invite my family and friends?\nDefinitely! You will receive an email invitation to the Peck School of the Arts Graduation Convocation in early April. Feel free to pass it along to friends to attend in-person or online. \n\n\n\n\nHow many guests may I bring?\nYou may bring as many guests as you like. Please RSVP with the total number of in-person attendees so we can plan accordingly. \n\n\n\n\nWhat should I wear?\nThere is no dress code for this event. You are welcome to wear your cap and gown but most students simply wear business attire.

SUMMARY:Springdances 2026
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeThursday–Sunday\, April 30–May 3\, 2026 (7:30–9:30 p.m.) \n\n \n\nLocationKenilworth Square East\, Jan Serr Studio and Virtual \n\n\n \nSpringdances 2026: We Also Bloom presents world premiere works that explore what it means to grow\, persist\, and flourish — even in the face of erasure\, displacement\, and silence. The dances in this program honor the enduring human impulse to take up space\, put down roots\, and rise. This evening features new works by guest artist Karlies Kelley\, and dance faculty Daniel Burkholder\, Tiffany Kadani\, Dan Schuchart\, and Christal Wagner. \n \nThe works spanning this evening move between the personal and the political\, the historical and the deeply felt. Choreographers draw on stories of marginalized communities celebrating their right to exist\, of neighborhoods razed and rebuilt through resistance\, of generational trauma transformed in the body\, and of individual journeys shaped by what we choose to carry — and what we leave behind. Across every work\, a common pulse beats: the insistence on blooming\, even in unlikely soil. \n \n \n\nThe bar is open! UWM Peck School of the Arts is proud to partner with Saz’s to offer a limited selection of beer\, wine\, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase at this event.\n\n\n\n \n \n\nIn-person Tickets\n\n\n\n\nGeneral\n$22\n\n\nSeniors 65+\, *UWM Faculty\, Staff & Alumni\n$17\n\n\nYouth 17 and Under\n$12\n\n\n*UWM Student\n$12\n\n\n*PSOA Student (events ONLY in your department)\nFREE\n\n\n*If you have a UWM email account\, please log in when visiting the Box Office page in order to display all UWM affiliated ticket pricing.\n\n\n \nLivestream Tickets\n\n\n\n\nLivestream\n$27\n\n\n–\n–\n\n\n–\n–\n\n\n–\n–\n\n\n–\n–\n\n\nLivestream URLs are sent from psoatix@uwm.edu to the purchasing e-mail two hours prior to event start time.\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\nPurchase In-Person Tickets\n \n\nPurchase Livestream Tickets\n \n\nView Program (PDF)

SUMMARY:The Body Speaks: Scribing and Scoring Autoethnography
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeFriday\, May 8\, 2026 (4–5 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationMitchell Hall\, Studio 254 \n\n\nDepartment of Dance Student Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) Kasey Eckhardt\, Paloma Kong-Ndoumbe\, Elise Leonard\, and Brooke Allison Parkinson collaborate with faculty mentor Maria Gillespie to present an informal showing of their choreographic research. Music performance by Paul Westfahl. \nThey will share their dance in which autoethnography\, movement\, and language reveal how embodiment is an unfixed\, evolving terrain offering a kinesthetic map that coexists with language. As a queer performance practice\, the work plays with the constraints of language as a limb to create portals into each other’s dancing stories\, and relate to each other as their dancing archives undergo translation and transfiguration. \n \n\nTickets are not required for this FREE event.

Originally built in 1915 by the Ford Motor Company\, the building once housed an automobile assembly plant for the Model T. The building was purchased by the federal government in the 1940s before being acquired by UWM to house the university motor pool\, mailroom\, and print shop\, among other auxiliary uses. A major renovation in 2006 transformed the building for use by the Peck School of the Arts\, including student and faculty studios\, performance and production spaces\, public galleries\, a screening room and various instructional facilities. SUMMARY:Dance MFA Thesis - "a cat in the classroom"
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeSaturday\, July 19\, 2025 (7:30–9 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationMitchell Hall\, Studio 254 \n\n\na cat in the classroom is a collaboration between Samuel B. Hanson\, UWM Dance MFA candidate\, and Nora Price\, a Milwaukee-native living and working in the Western U.S. known for a string of excellent post-punk bands and experimental dance films.  \nPerformances mine disparate sources: French movies of the late nineties\, classic American literature and educational theory\, manuals for the physical restraint of mentally ill people\, contact improvisation\, and the study of intimacy to explore the notion of defining dance as nothing more or less than the implication of a partner’s body. This new work takes its title from Theodore Roetke’s out-of-print Straw for the Fire\, itself a meditation on teaching and learning as a metaphor for volatile human relationships. \nThis project is created in conjunction with the UWM Department of Dance in partial fulfillment of work towards an MFA in Dance. Additional support made possible by a choreographic residency at the UWM Peck School of the Arts Department of Dance. \nPerformance by Alexandra Barbier\, Kaleigh Dent\, Meg Gourley\, & Samuel Hanson. \nIn-person Tickets\n\n\n\n\nGeneral\n$10\n\n\nSeniors 65+\, *UWM Faculty\, Staff & Alumni\n$8\n\n\nYouth 17 and Under\n$5\n\n\n*UWM Student\nFREE\n\n\n*PSOA Student (events ONLY in your department)\nFREE\n\n\n*If you have a UWM email account\, please log in when visiting the Box Office page in order to display all UWM affiliated ticket pricing.\n \n\n\nPurchase Tickets \nView Program (PDF)

SUMMARY:Moving Between Tongues: Choreographing Translation
DESCRIPTION:Dates\nLocation\n\n\n\n\nApril 14\, 2024 (4–5:30 p.m.)\nMitchell Hall\, Studio 254\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Dance Student Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) Lia Smith-Redmann\, Libby Steckmesser\, and Rae Zimmerli collaborate with faculty mentor Maria Gillespie to present an informal showing of their choreographic research.  Moving Between Tongues developed from choreographic research exploring meaning making in the pre and post lingual forms of dance.
