SUMMARY:Continuum 2026
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeSeptember 4–26\, 2026Wednesday–Friday (2–7 p.m.)\, Saturday (11 a.m.–3 p.m.)Reception: Friday\, September 4 (5–7 p.m\, remarks at 6 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationKenilworth Square East Gallery \n\n\nContinuum 2026 brings together two compelling exhibitions—one honoring the enduring influence of landscape through Kevin Giese’s work\, and the other reflecting on the lasting impact of mentorship and cultural exchange through a historic UWM study abroad experience. Together\, they offer a powerful exploration of place\, memory\, and artistic legacy across generations. \nTouching the Earth: Kevin Giese and Friends\nTouching the Earth features selected works by Kevin Giese\, created in the past 30 years\, including drawings\, paintings\, furniture\, and sculptural installations that reflect his deep connection to the Wisconsin landscape. \nThis show will also include selected artwork by Brent Budsberg\, Jeffrey Giese\, Shana McCaw\, David Niec\, Josie Osborne\, and Richard Taylor. \nMentorship & Memory: The Haitian Exchange with John Colt\nMentorship & Memory celebrates the profound and lifelong impact of a transformative 1977 study abroad program led by the late Professor John Colt. During this month-long arts study in Haiti\, fourteen UW-Milwaukee students were introduced to the island’s culture and artistic traditions through Colt’s personal connections\, including the Haitian National Museum. The experience culminated in a dedicated studio project and an international showcase\, serving as a pivotal moment that shaped the creative trajectories and professional lives of those involved\, including the late award-winning political cartoonist\, Stuart Carlson. \nConceived by Mary Carlson\, Jane Michalski\, and Warren Garstecki to honor her late husband and Professor Colt\, the exhibition reunites several of the original participants to showcase their artistic evolution over the nearly five decades since the trip. The exhibition features a diverse range of works from alumni\, alongside pieces by John Colt and his widow\, artist Ruth Kjaer. By blending contemporary artwork with personal statements and archival context from the original “Haitian Package” project\, the exhibition highlights the enduring power of mentorship and the lasting influence of cultural exchange on the UWM artistic community.

SUMMARY:Printers Sin Fronteras
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeSeptember 11–October 2\, 2026Wednesday–Fridays (2–7 p.m.)\, Saturdays (11 a.m.–3 p.m.)Reception: Thursday\, September 17 (5–7 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationTheatre Building\, Arts Center Gallery \n\n\nPrinters Sin Fronteras is a special collaboration and exhibition by artists who view communities without edges and are bound by curiosity\, not geography. We are related by our shared passion and commitments to meaningful exchanges through printmaking and papermaking. \nThe project showcases prints that emerged from residencies in Oaxaca\, Mexico\, at the Rufino Tamayo Fine Arts Workshop and the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca\, and Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, at Anchor Press\, Paper and Print and the Peck School of the Arts. \nAt each residency\, artists and students came together through a sense of cultural kinship grounded in dialogue\, guided by making\, and deepened by mutual learning. As printmakers\, these artists naturally thrive in environments that encourage storytelling and experimentation\, and remain committed to evolving techniques that translate experience and imagination into process and image.

The event was established in response to student requests and precedes the large UWM Commencement. We encourage you to attend both ceremonies. \nThe convocation ceremony begins with a procession of graduating students into the Bader Concert Hall. Students are seated on stage with the Dean and Department Chairs. There will be an address with opening remarks and all graduates being recognized. Students will be called up by department\, with each department introduced by a selection of work representing their discipline. When your department is standing\, you will be called by name to walk across the stage and receive your stole (a piece of academic regalia\, much like a long scarf\, that you can wear with your cap and gown to the campus-wide Commencement ceremony). After the closing remarks and recessional\, everyone crosses the lobby to Zelazo 280 for a dessert reception. \n\n\nIs the event in-person or virtual?\n\n\nPSOA Convocation is an in-person event\, which will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person. \n\n\nWho should participate?\n\n\nAll Peck School of the Arts students who have graduated or will be graduating by any of the dates listed above along with friends and family of graduating students are welcome to attend. \n\n\nDoes it cost anything?\n\n\nThe event is free. Tickets are not required\, but we do appreciate that you RSVP so we can best plan for your enjoyment. \n\n\nCan I invite my family and friends?\n\n\nDefinitely! You will receive an email invitation to the Peck School of the Arts Graduation Convocation in early April. Feel free to pass it along to friends to attend in-person or online. \n\n\nHow many guests may I bring?\n\n\nYou may bring as many guests as you like. Please RSVP with the total number of in-person attendees so we can plan accordingly. \n\n\nWhat should I wear?\n\n\nThere is no dress code for this event. You are welcome to wear your cap and gown but most students simply wear business attire.
