Biography
Karl Meyers currently serves as the Interim Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This chiefly involves directing the Symphony Band, being the Assistant Music Director of the UWM Youth Wind program (“UWAY”), directing the Panther (basketball/pep) Band, and assisting with the general operation of the university bands.
Helping ensembles and audiences experience an unselfconscious aesthetic and visceral musical experience is one of his chief aims. He believes that significant attention and engagement in the process of moving towards these moments, and what that process consists of, are of paramount importance in the experience of the performer and the listener, and it is to this end he strives.
Karl is in the process of completing his Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting degree with Dr. Kevin Michael Holzman at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. Prior to attending CCM to pursue the aforementioned doctorate, Karl Meyers taught 7-12 instrumental music and was the department chair of the Fine Arts Department at Benjamin Franklin High School in Queen Creek, AZ, where the Fine Arts program involved approximately 60% of the student body (choir, orchestra, band, guitar, dance, theater, and visual arts) . In addition to his teaching duties, Karl has led professional development at multiple district campuses (Mindset & Motivation, Professional Practices and Responsibilities, and Lesson Plan Formatting and Website Linking and Coding) and at the Arizona Music Educators Conference (Mindset & Motivation). Further, he has had the opportunity to work with individuals and ensembles in clinic and masterclass capacities, notably for multiple years at the Many Farms Fine Arts Festival, in Many Farms, AZ.
Karl earned his undergraduate degrees in music composition and music education at the University of Northwestern St. Paul, in St. Paul, MN where he studied conducting with Tim Sawyer and Monte Mumford. He has worked with such conductors as Allan MacMurray, H. Robert Reynolds, Craig Kirchhoff, and Frank Ticheli. He also holds a master’s degree in music education from Arizona State University, where he focused his studies on mindset and motivation, particularly as it pertains to pedagogy in music education.
