Biography

Joseph Grennier is an artist, designer, developer and educator recently hired into the UW-Milwaukee Department of Art and Design to teach and develop core curriculum in Digital Studio Practice. After earning his MFA in Art and Technology from UWM in 2014, Grennier held a Visiting Assistant Professorship in the Department of Art and Design at Hubei University of Technology in Wuhan, China. In this role, he lead 3D modeling and digital fabrication courses for 160 EFL students in Central China’s most populous city, developing a partnership program between Hubei University of Technology and UW-Milwaukee. Upon returning to the US, Grennier relocated to Seattle, WA to further his studies in full-stack web development. He later served as an Assistant Professor in the departments of Computer Science and Visual Art at Cardinal Stritch University, developing and leading courses in digital art and design, front-end development, object-oriented programming (Processing) and digital fabrication (Rhino 3D). More recently, he excelled in an industry role, assessing implementing and overseeing technology policies, procedures and best practices for MRA, a 4000+ member-company employer’s association and training institute with offices throughout the Midwest. In his research, Grennier works extensively with video, print, digital fabrication, programming and web technologies. While there exists a prominent through line of digital technology, he also employs traditional media, collaboration and a deep knowledge and appreciation of art historical and contemporary discourses within his practice. He remains an active and engaged researcher in his fields, participating in lectures, conferences, exhibitions, reading, writing and studio practice. Grennier is presently teaching an “Ideas Challenge” designated course (Art 318/418 Electronics and Sculpture) in the new Lubar Center for Entrepreneurship Innovation Studio and multiple sections of Art 118 – Digital Arts: Culture, Theory, Practice, while serving as Area Head for Digital Studio Practice and Faculty Advisor for the “Decode” Art and Technology Student Organization. In the classroom, he employs myriad approaches to engage diverse audiences and learning styles. Grennier was awarded his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA, 2011) in Digital Studio Practice and Master of Fine Arts (MFA, 2014) in Art and Technology from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, Peck School of the Arts. His works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally.
