Internationally acclaimed architects and practitioners comprise the\u202fjury for the coveted\u202f2021\u202fMarcus Prize, awarded by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning in partnership with the\u00a0Marcus\u202fCorporation\u202fFoundation<\/a>. Tatiana Bilbao,\u202fDavid Brown and\u202fLesley\u202fLokko will join\u202fDavid Marcus and\u202fRobert\u202fGreenstreet on this year\u2019s jury, which will meet later this summer and announce the\u00a02021 Marcus Prize\u00a0in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mo Zell, professor and chair of the architecture department, said she was thrilled to have Bilbao, Brown and Lokko as jurors this year. \u201cThey bring a wealth of experience, expertise and leadership,\u202fbut most importantly inspiration,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBilbao, Brown and Lokko are encouraging the next generation of architects by leading important conversations about how architecture is a collaborative act that engages neighborhoods, cities and people,\u201d Zell added.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meet the Jury<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tatiana Bilbao<\/strong>,\u202frecipient of the 2019 Marcus Prize,\u202ffounded Mexico City-based Tatiana Bilbao\u202fEstudio\u202fin 2004\u202fwith the aim of integrating social values, collaboration and sensitive design approaches to architectural work.\u202fBilbao holds a recurring teaching position at Yale University\u2019s School of Architecture\u202fand has taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Architectural Association\u202fSchool of Architecture in\u202fLondon and many more.\u202fHer work has been featured in publications including the New York Times, A+U and Domus.\u202f

David Brown<\/strong>\u202fis a designer, researcher, and educator based at the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at\u202fChicago\u202fand\u202fis\u202fthe artistic director of the 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Brown investigates non-hierarchical, flexible and variable approaches to urban design. Brown\u2019s work has been exhibited in the Venice Architecture Biennale (2012), the Chicago Cultural Center\u2019s Expo 72 (2013),\u202fand\u202fthe Chicago Architecture Biennial (2015).\u202fBrown has taught at Florida A&M University and Rice University.\u202f

Lesley Lokko<\/strong>,\u202fPh.D., is the founder and director of the African Futures Institute, a postgraduate school of architecture and public platform of built environment disciplines located in Accra, Ghana.\u202fShe has lectured and published widely\u202fon the subject of race, identity and architecture. Lokko was the founder and director of the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, and she has also served as the\u202fDean of Architecture at the Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York.\u202fLokko\u202fis a visiting professor at her alma\u202fmatter, the Bartlett School of Architecture,\u202fUniversity College London, and sits on the boards of the Architecture Foundation in London and the U.N. Council on Urban Initiatives.\u202fLokko\u202falso is a bestselling\u202fnovelist.\u202f\u202f

David Marcus<\/strong>\u202fis the chairman of the Marcus Corporation Foundation.\u202fHe has chaired the foundation for the last\u202ffive\u202fyears and has helped steward the foundation since 2005.\u202fMarcus\u202fis a board member of Goodwill Industries of Southeast Wisconsin, Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and Sculpture Milwaukee. He is the past chair of the Froedtert Foundation and Betty\u202fBrinn\u202fChildren\u2019s Museum.\u202fHe also leads Marcus\u202fInvestments, the Marcus family\u2019s private investment arm.\u202fMarcus\u202fInvestments holdings includes Berengaria Real Estate Development, Hospitality Democracy restaurants,\u202fVerlo\u202fMattress and a minority interest in the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club.\u202f

Robert Greenstreet<\/strong>,\u202fPh.D.,\u202fis\u202fdean emeritus of UWM\u2019s School of Architecture and Urban Planning.\u202fHe specializes in the legal aspects of construction and has authored or co-authored seven books and published over 180 working papers and articles. In addition to being a registered architect in the United Kingdom, he is a practicing arbitrator, mediator and expert witness recognized in both the United States and Europe. In 2013, Greenstreet received the AIA\/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education, and in 2016, he was named Fellow of the Royal\u202fInstitute of British Architects, one of only 30 elected worldwide.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Marcus Prize<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Marcus Prize was established\u202fin 2005\u202fas a biennial, international architecture award recognizing the talent and achievements of emerging architects in the early stages of their careers. The award recognizes both the past accomplishments of emerging architects, as well as their promise of future contributions to the field of architecture. Past recipients include\u202fWiny Maas, Frank\u202fBarkow, Alejandro\u202fAravena,\u202fDi\u00e9b\u00e9do\u202fFrancis\u202fK\u00e9r\u00e9, Sou Fujimoto, Joshua Ramus, Jeanne Gang and Tatiana\u202fBilbao.\u202f
