SUMMARY:Building Community Wealth with Community Land Trusts
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeWednesday\, November 18\, 2026 (12-1 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationVirtual \n\n\nAn Innovative Cities Lecture\nCommunity land trusts (CLTs) are emerging as one of the most effective tools for creating permanently affordable homeownership while building long-term community wealth. This session provides an overview of the community land trust model\, including how nonprofit organizations\, municipalities\, financial institutions\, and for-profit developers can partner to expand affordable housing opportunities. \nSpeakers will describe the legal framework\, stewardship responsibilities\, legislative considerations\, and financing strategies that support CLTs at neighborhood\, municipal\, and regional scales. Case studies from Milwaukee and Madison will demonstrate how community land trusts create predictable housing costs\, preserve affordability for future generations\, and strengthen neighborhoods through shared equity and long-term stewardship. The presentation will include lessons learned and highlight innovative homeownership initiatives\, including the Homebuyer Choice Pilot Program\, and discuss how partnerships and policy can increase access to affordable housing while creating lasting community assets. \nBiographies\nAaron Foley is a Shareholder with the law firm of von Briesen & Roper\, s.c. He focuses his legal practice on estate planning\, probate and trust administration\, real estate and advising nonprofit organizations. Specifically\, he primarily represents individuals and families through the development of a comprehensive estate plan including creating trusts\, preparing powers of attorney and drafting corporate documents and deeds to transfer real estate to descendants. Aaron serves as a board member for Groundwork Milwaukee and is a member of the Milwaukee Community Land Trust stewardship committee. Aaron and his wife Megan are raising three children and enjoy gardening\, camping and being outside! \nOlivia R. Williams earned her PhD in Geography from Florida State University in 2017\, focusing on community land trusts (CLTs). Since 2014\, she has researched\, written\, and published extensively on community land trusts\, with work appearing in Urban Geography\, Antipode\, Journal of Urban Affairs\, and Housing Studies. She served as Executive Director of Madison Area Community Land Trust from 2020 to 2025\, founded the Wisconsin CLT Network in 2021\, and is now an Associate at Burlington Associates\, providing technical assistance to CLTs in the US. \nLamont Davis is the Executive Director of Milwaukee Community Land Trust (MCLT)\, a nonprofit organization that creates permanently affordable homeownership opportunities to strengthen neighborhoods and build community wealth. MCLT partners with neighborhood-based organizations\, nonprofit and for-profit developers\, municipalities\, and community stakeholders to acquire\, rehabilitate\, and steward homes for income-qualified buyers. Using the Community Land Trust model\, MCLT ensures homes remain affordable for future generations while allowing homeowners to build equity. Through collaboration\, stewardship\, and community engagement\, MCLT expands access to homeownership\, prevents displacement\, and supports long-term neighborhood stability. \nLivestream Details\n\n\n\nRegister + Join Lecture\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nThis lecture is worth 1 LAW credit of AICP CM. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Carolyn Esswein: cesswein@uwm.edu

SUMMARY:Future Firm: Future / Practice
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeFriday\, Feb 12\, 2027 (4:00-5:00 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationArchitecture & Urban Planning Building\, Room 170 \n\n\nFounded by Ann Lui and Craig Reschke in 2015 and joined by principal Linda Chávez Baca in 2023\, Future Firm works across spatial scales with a focus on arts and culture organizations\, non-profits\, and mission-driven businesses. Future Firm operates on the core belief that architecture and design is a key ingredient in the building of a more equitable and vibrant city\, for everyone. \nTo this end\, the firm’s approaches are built on the idea that design is a process\, not an end result\, which seeks to improve outcomes through iteration\, testing\, and discussion. In order to tackle these urgent questions in the built environment\, Future Firm’s practice is modeled after a mountain climbing team\, focusing on elevating diverse points of view and interdisciplinary approaches to solve complex challenges. The firm’s practice expands upon traditional scope of architectural practice—supporting partners in building momentum for their ideas through design\, research\, and strategic thinking.

SUMMARY:Sean Burkholder & Karen Luntsky / Curious Methods: Contextual Design with Dynamic Landscape Systems
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeTuesday\, February 16\, 2027 (4:00-5:00 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationArchitecture & Urban Planning Building\, Room 170 \n\n\nThis talk will explore the role of curiosity\, experimentation\, and temporality through the work of two landscape architecture educators. It will use written\, instructed\, and built projects to make a case for a research and design practice that is more open to and inclusive of the spatial and temporal dynamics that make landscapes such delightful collaborators. \nGuests\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSean Burkholder\, Associate Professor\, Landscape Architecture\, Cornell University; Co-Founder\, Proof Project; Co-Director\, Healthy Port Futures project \nBurkholder is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University. He is also co-founder of Proof Projects and co-director of the Healthy Port Futures project. His research and practice address challenges facing coastal landscapes\, with a particular focus on lake-based geographies. As a member of the Dredge Research Collaborative\, he examines coastal sediments and processes as a unifying thread across diverse coastal conditions. His work employs adaptive management\, environmental monitoring\, speculation\, and storytelling to envision positive futures grounded in temporality\, curiosity\, and experimentation. He co-authored Five Bay Landscapes: Curious Explorations of the Great Lakes Region (University of Pittsburgh Press\, 2022) and is currently completing Lakemaker: Surveys\, Stories\, and Speculations of Held Water (AR+D). \n\nKaren Lutsky\, Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture\, Cornell University; Director/Founder\, Great Lakes Design Labs \nKaren Lutsky is an assistant professor of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University and the director/founder of the Great Lakes Design Labs. Before this recent move to Cornell\, Karen spent almost a decade in the Landscape Architecture Department at the University of Minnesota. Karen’s work focuses on how landscape architects and designers might better design ‘with’ changing landscapes. This work includes the development of the design approach\, ‘Curious Methods’\, and a particular emphasis on the ‘quick’ littoral landscapes of the Great Lakes Basin and ‘slow’ growth and cycles of trees and vegetation. She recently co-authored the University of Pittsburgh Press book Five Bay Landscapes: Curious Explorations of the Great Lakes Basin (University of Pittsburgh Press\, 2022) and has also written articles and book chapters for publications such as Places Journal\, The Third Coast Atlas\, Conceptual Landscapes\, 30 Trees\, and Scenario Journal.

DESCRIPTION:Date & Time*Mar 31-Aug 14\, 2027Monday–Friday (9 a.m.–6 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationJim Shields Gallery of Architecture & Urbanism & Various \n\n\nparTyparTi\nThis exhibition presents an evolving investigation into technotonics: the relationships among architecture\, sound\, vibration\, bodies\, technology\, and collective life. The project brings together architectural research on underground sonic communities\, experimental work with sound and material sensing\, and research into ambience\, camp\, and practice-based\, auto-theoretical experiences drawn from my work within Chicago’s gay nightlife and entertainment industry. \nConceived as an embodied research environment\, the gallery asks how architecture participates in producing collective sonic experience. Walls\, floors\, thresholds\, infrastructures\, technologies\, and bodies become instruments through which sound is contained\, transmitted\, amplified\, regulated\, and shared. Through recordings\, architectural fragments\, drawings\, sensing technologies\, sound\, and other experimental media\, the exhibition considers how nightlife and sonic communities temporarily reorganize architecture into spaces of gathering\, listening\, social connection\, and collective occupation.

SUMMARY:Peterson Rich Office (PRO) / Buildings Tell Stories
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeThursday\, April 8\, 2027 (4:00-5:00 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationArchitecture & Urban Planning Building\, Room 170 \n\n\nWe like to say that buildings tell stories. The goal is always to find a thread between what a building or a site has been and what it can become—adding something new and distinctly contemporary without erasing what came before. In practice\, this means new architecture layered within old\, and materials reused rather than discarded—finding value in what is already there. The lecture will highlight projects that try giving people a more complex relationship with history: not as something finished and separate\, but as something alive that we actively engage with\, reinterpret\, and continue. \nGuests\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeterson Rich Office (PRO) is an architecture and design practice recognized for cultural and publicly engaged projects at multiple scales. Since establishing the firm in 2014\, principals Miriam Peterson and Nathan Rich have led a diverse team in realizing projects for leading clients in the cultural\, residential\, retail\, and public sectors. \nThe firm has developed a significant body of work around adaptive reuse\, especially with projects that introduce new elements into structures of historic significance. \nMay 2026 saw the completion of new 12\,000 sf special exhibition spaces for The Metropolitan Museum of Art adjacent to the Great Hall\, with the Costume Institute’s annual spring exhibition\, Costume Art\, which PRO also designed. The project also includes a new entry to the museum\, a new ground level public concourse\, and a new stair in the Great Hall\, representing the first major investment the Metropolitan Museum has made in public spaces in more than 30 years. Other recent projects of note include the MoMA Design Store in Soho\, The Shepherd Gallery & Arts Center in Detroit\, the Pruzan Art Gallery at Wesleyan University\, and artist studios for Nina Chanel Abney and Mickalene Thomas.
