SUMMARY:A+A+A / Architecture In-Between: Neighbors in the City
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeTuesday\, September 15\, 2026 (12:30-5:30 p.m.) \n\n\n\n\n\nLocationArchitecture & Urban Planning Building\, Room 170 \n\n\n\n\n\nA+A+A is a New York based design studio working across North America and Asia. Founded by Andrea\, Arianna\, and Ashely\, the studio designs buildings\, interiors\, exhibitions and experiences that make space for people – emotionally\, culturally\, and physically. \n\n\n\nTheir work is rooted in a deep understanding of architectural design\, public space and the knowledge required to navigate civic processes\, community input and cross-industry collaboration. Whether shaping a home\, curating a public moment\, or developing a brand’s physical presence\, they approach every project with clarity\, curiosity\, and care. \n\n\n\nGuests\n\n\n\n\nArianna Deane\, Assistant Professor\, Parsons School of Design & Partner\, A+A+A\n\n\n\nAshely Kuo\, Partner\, A+A+A\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to giving a lecture about their work\, A+A+A will lead a collaborative drawing workshop that explores ideas of neighborhood dynamics\, public space\, and stakeholder needs. Students will work together on a continuous drawing across a long table—representing a neighborhood—to navigate program\, form\, and edge conditions collaboratively. \n\n\n\nThroughout the session\, A+A+A will introduce scenario-based prompts that require students to respond to changing conditions\, such as infrastructure needs\, community events\, or conflicts between neighboring sites. Participants will work with those around them to solve problems\, connect projects\, and adapt their designs as the neighborhood evolves. The workshop encourages students to think beyond individual designs and consider how architecture can be shaped by adjacent sites\, public space considerations\, city infrastructure\, and local governance. By the end\, the class will have created a collective drawing that reflects the interconnected nature of designing within a neighborhood. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented as part of a collaboration with the ARCH 311: Design V Studio coordinated by Assistant Professor Aaron Tobey. The time of the lecture will be announced soon.

SUMMARY:Community Wayfinding: Building Identity\, Connectivity\, and Economic Vitality
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeWednesday\, October 14\, 2026 (12-1 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationVirtual \n\n\nAn Innovative Cities Lecture\nCommunity wayfinding systems do much more than direct people from one destination to another—they shape how residents and visitors experience a place. This lecture explores the planning\, design\, and implementation of community wayfinding programs\, beginning with downtown business districts and expanding to neighborhoods\, parks\, regional trail systems\, and community gateways. \nLearn about the newly developed Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation Community Wayfinding Toolkit\, demonstrating how communities of all sizes can create coordinated wayfinding systems that enhance economic development\, visitor experiences\, and local pride. \nShowcasing examples from Wisconsin cities\, presenters will share how wayfinding supports tourism\, strengthens community identity\, and reinforces branding through coordinated logo and graphic design. Speakers will share the process of developing a successful wayfinding program\, including stakeholder committees\, public engagement\, funding strategies\, sign hierarchy\, walkable maps\, messaging\, GIS mapping\, and long-term maintenance responsibilities. The process and outcomes highlight the importance of designing wayfinding systems at multiple scales\, from pedestrian-oriented downtown signage to regional trail networks connected to county recreation systems. \nLivestream Details\n \n\nRegistration details will be available soon.\n\n\n\n \n\nAICP-CM credits will be awarded. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Carolyn Esswein: cesswein@uwm.edu

SUMMARY:Building Community Wealth with Community Land Trusts
DESCRIPTION:Date & TimeWednesday\, November 18\, 2026 (12-1 p.m.) \n\n\nLocationVirtual \n\n\nAn Innovative Cities Lecture\nCommunity land trusts (CLTs) are emerging as one of the most effective tools for creating permanently affordable homeownership while building long-term community wealth. Case studies from Milwaukee and Madison will demonstrate how community land trusts create predictable housing costs\, preserve affordability for future generations\, and strengthen neighborhoods through shared equity and long-term stewardship. The presentation will include lessons learned and highlight innovative homeownership initiatives\, including the Homebuyer Choice Pilot Program\, and discuss how partnerships and policy can increase access to affordable housing while creating lasting community assets. \nLivestream Details\n \n\nRegistration details will be available soon.\n\n\n\n \n\nAICP-CM credits will be awarded. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Carolyn Esswein: cesswein@uwm.edu
