Summer 2021: Archaeology Field School

Anthropology 567: Archaeological Field School

The UWM Archaeological Field School will be conducting archaeological investigations in Milwaukee at the location of the 1855 North Point Lighthouse in Lake Park. In addition to our excavations, we will conduct survey near Milwaukee. The 1855 North Point Lighthouse was in operation until 1888. We continue research started on the 1855 North Point Lighthouse that have consisted of archaeological survey and ground penetrating radar studies. The focus of our excavations will be to follow up leads from the ground penetrating radar studies to test if the foundation of the lighthouse is still present. Methods and techniques that students will learn include survey of cultivated fields, shovel testing, test unit excavation, and feature excavation.

The staff and students on the field school will follow established safety protocols set by UWM and the UWM CRM Program for field excavation during the COVID 19 pandemic. Social distance of six feet will be maintained and masks worn when social distance cannot be maintained. Hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and hand soap will be supplied for students and staff to clean hands and equipment on a daily basis.
