{"id":62,"date":"2016-08-16T16:16:28","date_gmt":"2016-08-16T21:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/animal-care\/?page_id=62"},"modified":"2026-02-03T14:27:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T20:27:46","slug":"field-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/animal-care\/field-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Field Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All studies that involve the handling of live vertebrate animals should be submitted on a regular protocol form in <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.my.irbmanager.com\/Login.aspx?clientid=uwm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I-Manager<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If your study consists of the direct, unobtrusive observation of free-ranging animals under natural conditions and does not require that animals be contacted, captured or restrained at any time you should complete the &#8220;Protocol for Field Observational Studies&#8221; located in <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.my.irbmanager.com\/Login.aspx?clientid=uwm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I-Manager<\/a>. This form will then be reviewed by the IACUC Chair and Veterinarian to determine if it qualifies to be exempt from any further review.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UWM personnel who teach field classes or conduct observational studies<\/strong>\u00a0are required to go through the certification process. Instructors and teaching assistants should also be familiar with the long version of &#8220;Use of Live Animals in Teaching Classes and Observational Field Studies&#8221;. The short version should be incorporated into the class syllabus. The use of these forms for training will make it unnecessary for students in teaching classes and individuals participating in observational field studies to complete the regular training program and the certification exam.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/animal-care\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/404\/2016\/11\/The-Use-of-Live-Animals-in-Teaching-and-Observational-Field-Studies-Long.docx\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Use of Live Animals in Teaching Classes and Observational Field Studies<\/a> (long version)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/panthers.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/r\/sites\/USAWebID2.0Upgrade\/Shared%20Documents\/Research%20Compliance\/Animal%20Care\/The-Use-of-Live-Animals-in-Teaching-and-Observational-Field-Studies-Short.docx?d=w9a1a9fa2a1a5429e8fb5d787570dcd4f&amp;csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=XeRElt\">Use of Live Animals in Teaching Classes and Observational Field Studies<\/a> (short version)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Non-UWM personnel who teach field classes or conduct observational studies on UWM property<\/strong>\u00a0are required to review the long version of the &#8220;Use of Live Animals in Teaching Classes and Observational Field Studies&#8221; (long version) and complete the on-line \u201cQuiz for Teaching\/Observational Field Studies\u201d on the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/animal-care\/training\/\">Animal Program Training<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>The long and short training versions direct individuals to the animal care program&#8217;s website, which has information on minimizing risks, including allergies, in working with animals under occupational health and safety.
