Alumnus Named Deputy Director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum

Congratulations to alumnus Joel Westphal on his recent appointment as Deputy Director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum located in Grand Rapids (museum) and Ann Arbor (library), Michigan. Among his many duties in this role, he shares in the planning, directing and oversight of the organization’s programs and special activities, including professional conferences and symposiums involving scholars and prominent public officials.

Prior to this appointment, Mr. Westphal held numerous positions with the United States Navy, including Director of the Navy Archives, one of the largest repositories of federal records outside of the National Archives, located at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. He also served as Chief, Records Management Section at Central Command, working as the Executive Agent for the Preservation of all Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM records created by Central Command and all subordinate Joint Task Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr. Westphal has also worked as a records manager for numerous federal agencies including the Federal Trade Commission, Federal Railroad Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. He taught American and military history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he received degrees in history (BA ’02, MA ’05) and library and information science (MLIS ’05).
