{"id":7445,"date":"2025-12-23T12:19:47","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T18:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/webid2-test-lsweb\/?page_id=7445"},"modified":"2026-02-09T16:24:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T22:24:26","slug":"financial-support-graduate-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/african-diaspora-studies\/students\/graduate\/financial-support-graduate-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial Support for Graduate Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The department does not currently offer assistantships or tuition remissions to students in the MA program.\u00a0However, students in this program are eligible to apply for DGSF and AOP Fellowships.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-general-funding-information\">General Funding Information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies is able to guarantee three-to-four years of funding for students in the PhD Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most admitted PhD students are funded via academic-year Teaching\u00a0Assistantships, which require approximately 20\u00a0hours of work per week. In addition to their stipends (approximately $13,750 per academic year for a teaching assistant), these appointments include full remission of tuition (both in-state and out-of-state tuition), as well as benefits such as low-cost health insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some PhD students may also be funded through Research Assistantships or Project Assistantships (which also typically require 20 hours of work per week).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chancellor-s-awards\">Chancellor\u2019s Awards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chancellor\u2019s Graduate Students Awards are offered to newly admitted students each year. These awards combine a grant with a 50% teaching assistantship. Both the grant and the TA position may be renewed for a second year. Chancellor\u2019s Awards ore usually awarded to non-residents applying to the PhD program. No application is needed to be considered for a Chancellor Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uwm-graduate-school-fellowships\">UWM Graduate School Fellowships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Graduate School currently offers<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/fellowships\/\">&nbsp;five fellowships<\/a>&nbsp;for full-time study, each with a monthly stipend for the academic year, coverage of in-state tuition and remission of out of state tuition (for students who are not residents of the State of Wisconsin), and eligibility of state-sponsored health insurance. Fellowship recipients are responsible for paying segregated free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/fellowships\/distinguished-graduate-student-fellowship-guidelines\/\">UWM Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship (DGSF)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/fellowships\/distinguished-dissertation-fellowship-guidelines\/\">Distinguished Dissertation Fellowship (DDF)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/fellowships\/aop-fellowship-guidelines\/\">UWM Advanced Opportunity Program (AOP) Fellowship<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We encourage students to apply for extramural funding.
