SUMMARY:Active Teaching Lab - AI in Education
DESCRIPTION:AI in Education: What’s New\, What Matters\, and What’s Next\n\n\n\nDavid Delgado\n\n\n\nAI continues to reshape how we teach\, learn\, and work. But as new tools and capabilities emerge\, it can be difficult to know what deserves our attention\, and what these changes mean for our courses. \n\n\n\nIn this month’s session\, David Delgado will guide us through the evolving AI landscape. Together\, we’ll explore what instructors should be watching\, the questions we should be asking\, and practical ways to make informed\, intentional decisions about AI in our classrooms.Whether you are experimenting with AI\, setting boundaries for its use\, or still deciding where it belongs\, this session will help you approach the semester with greater clarity. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThis session will be held in-person and virtually via Zoom. Registration is not required but helps us prepare. \n\n\n\nJoin via this Link! \n\n\n\nEngelmann Hall\, RM B732033 E Hartford Ave\,Milwaukee\, WI 53211 \n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Form\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n University Email(Required)\n \n Please provide instructions if you require accommodations for this eventUniversity Appointment?\n \n \n Tenured / Tenured-track Faculty\n \n \n \n Non-tenured Faculty\n \n \n \n Staff\n \n \n \n Teaching Assistant\n \n \n \n Student\n \n \n \n Other\n If you selected Other\, please explain.University Department or Business Unit? How did you hear about this event? SUMMARY:Active Teaching Lab - Learning with Vevox
DESCRIPTION:Participation Without Raising a Hand: Active Learning with Vevox\n\n\n\nJoseph O’Halloran\n\n\n\nHow can we boost engagement and encourage more students to contribute\, especially in a large class? \n\n\n\nIn our October Active Teaching Lab\, Joseph O’Halloran will share how he uses Vevox in his 60-plus-student physics course. Through live polls\, in-class graded quizzes\, and anonymous questions\, Vevox gives students multiple ways to participate\, test their understanding\, and ask for clarification. Joe found that these options led to greater participation\, including more questions from students who might not otherwise raise their hands. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, we’ll consider how active learning can support AI-aware teaching. By asking students to practice\, apply\, and demonstrate their understanding during class\, instructors can keep students engaged in the work of learning while reducing opportunities to offload that thinking to AI. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThis session will be held in-person and virtually via Zoom. SUMMARY:Active Teaching Lab - Computer Science and AI
DESCRIPTION:Teaching Computer Science When AI Can Write the Code\n\n\n\nJohn Boyland\n\n\n\nWhat should students learn\, and how should instructors assess that learning\, when AI can produce much of the work students were once expected to do themselves? \n\n\n\nIn our November Active Teaching Lab\, John Boyland will share how AI has led him to rethink how he teaches computer science. Traditionally\, programming assignments have served as both practice and evidence that students can design\, write\, test\, and debug code. But when AI can generate a working solution\, a finished program may tell us little about what a student understands or can do. \n\n\n\nJohn will discuss his efforts to refocus homework on practice while assessing foundational skills more directly through paper-based coding\, explanation quizzes\, and debugging reports. He’ll also share what he has observed since making these changes to his course. \n\n\n\nFinally\, we’ll consider what his experience suggests for computer science education\, and for other disciplines where AI can now produce work that once served as evidence of learning. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThis session will be held in-person and virtually via Zoom. SUMMARY:Active Teaching Lab - Authentic Learning
DESCRIPTION:Doing the Work\, not just Reading about It: Building Courses Around Skills Students Can Use\n\n\n\nDianne Crowley\n\n\n\nHow can we design learning experiences that help students connect what they learn in our courses to what they may be asked to do beyond the classroom? \n\n\n\nIn our final Active Teaching Lab of the semester\, Dianne Crowley will share how she has redesigned her courses around hands-on\, applied learning. Rather than building her event-planning course primarily around readings\, Dianne challenged students to design and produce real events. Students selected venues\, developed promotions\, raised funds\, and managed the event themselves. Over six years\, these student-created events raised more than $50\,000 for Milwaukee non-profit organizations while giving students practical experience they could add to their résumés and carry into their careers.  \n\n\n\nIn addition\, we’ll explore how coursework built around relevant\, transferable skills can demonstrate to students the value of what we are teaching\, prepare them for changing professional expectations\, and help students make stronger connections between college and life beyond the classroom. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThis session will be held in-person and virtually via Zoom. Registration is not required but helps us prepare. \n\n\n\nJoin via this Link! \n\n\n\nEngelmann Hall\, RM B732033 E Hartford Ave\,Milwaukee\, WI 53211 \n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Form\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n University Email(Required)\n \n Please provide instructions if you require accommodations for this eventUniversity Appointment?\n \n \n Tenured / Tenured-track Faculty\n \n \n \n Non-tenured Faculty\n \n \n \n Staff\n \n \n \n Teaching Assistant\n \n \n \n Student\n \n \n \n Other\n If you selected Other\, please explain.University Department or Business Unit? How did you hear about this event?
