SUMMARY:Scantron is Sunsetting: What Comes Next?
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nAs university-wide Scantron support winds down\, many instructors are facing a crossroads in their assessment strategy. This 60-minute “Lunch and Learn” provides a space to discuss and prepare for the transition. From 12:00–12:30\, we will address departmental licensing options for alternative scanning software\, how to maximize Canvas Quizzes for high-stakes testing\, and digital “paper-to-cloud” tools that replicate the Scantron experience. We will also provide resources and options to modify exams in the age of generative AI—including “AI-resistant” question design\, digital proctoring\, and alternative question design. The remaining 30 minutes will be for questions and discussions among current Scantron users.  \n\n\n\nEvent Location\n\n\n\nVirtually on ZoomRegister to get the link to the event! \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Form\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n University Email(Required)\n \n Please provide instructions if you require accommodations for this eventUniversity Appointment?\n \n \n Tenured / Tenured-track Faculty\n \n \n \n Non-tenured Faculty\n \n \n \n Staff\n \n \n \n Teaching Assistant\n \n \n \n Student\n \n \n \n Other\n If you selected Other\, please explain.University Department or Business Unit? How did you hear about this event? SUMMARY:Open House Retirement Party for Connie Schroeder
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nAfter more than two decades of dedicated service to UW–Milwaukee and a remarkable forty-year career in higher education\, CASL’s very own\, Connie Schroeder will be retiring in May. \n\n\n\nWe invite all faculty\, staff\, and students that have known or worked with Connie to join CASL for a celebratory Open House Retirement Party on Wednesday\, May 6\, 2026 in Engelmann Hall B73 from 12:00–2:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nRegardless of whether you are able to join us in person to celebrate Connie\, we invite you to take a moment to share words of appreciation on her impact on UWM’s teaching and learning.  \n\n\n\nSince joining UWM in 2002\, Connie has been a foundational force in shaping the university’s culture of teaching excellence\, equity\, and student success. As the Senior Consultant for Instructional and Organizational Development\, her influence has reached every corner of campus\, where she has mentored generations of instructors and partnered with various departments to embed high-impact\, evidence-based practices into the UWM curriculum. \n\n\n\nConnie’s impact extended well beyond the boundaries of our campus as a recognized consultant\, speaker\, and scholar. Her 2011 book\, Coming in from the Margins\, helped redefine the strategic role of teaching centers in higher education transformation\, while her leadership within the POD Network earned her the prestigious Robert Menges Award on two separate occasions. At UWM\, she was instrumental in leading signature professional development programs\, including the creation of the Course Design Institute\, Educators’ Institute\, multiple certificate programs\, and heralding the Active Learning Classroom Initiative on campus\, leaving behind valuable institutional infrastructure that will benefit the university for years to come. \n\n\n\nWhat truly distinguishes Connie is the combination of professional depth and personal warmth she brought to her work every day. Whether spearheading campus-wide initiatives or providing thoughtful one-on-one consultations\, she has always remained a steadfast advocate for faculty and student engagement. Her colleagues at CASL and throughout the university will remember her tireless work ethic and the mentorship she has extended to everyone she encountered. As Connie moves into this next chapter\, we celebrate a legacy of service that fundamentally improved the learning experiences of countless students and wish her the very best in her retirement. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Location\n\n\n\nEngelmann Hall (ENG) B732033 E. SUMMARY:Inclusive Teaching Towards Justice (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:This three-part workshop series is a professional development opportunity aimed at preparing instructors to effectively teach UWM’s diverse student body. Inclusive Teaching Toward Justice focuses on how inclusive teaching can contribute to UWM’s goal of becoming a more radically welcoming and equitable campus. Instructors who complete the workshop series will further their understanding of how to apply inclusive teaching practices in their course planning and design\, classroom facilitation\, and assessment of student learning. \n– – –\nSession 1: Teaching and Learning through the Lens of Social Identities\nThis session offers a brief introduction to inclusive teaching goals and underlying values\, emphasizing how this teaching approach benefits all students and especially those from groups historically underrepresented in higher education. Participants will leave able to: \n\nSuccinctly explain key components and principles of inclusive teaching\nDefine “social identity” and name examples\nDescribe and implement in a course at least one concrete way of valuing students’ identities\n\nSession 2: Building Inclusive Classroom Communities\nThis session addresses why an inclusive classroom community (or its absence) matters to student learning. We will explore ways to foster students’ sense of belonging and to engage conflict constructively in the classroom. Participants will leave able to: \n\nName factors that contribute to belonging and a welcoming climate—and factors that impede this\nPractice at least one concrete way of building class community\nDescribe considerations and strategies an instructor might use to handle conflict moments in the classroom\n\nSession 3: Inclusive Course and Assignment Design\nThis session will focus on practical ways of designing both courses and specific assignments through an inclusive teaching lens. How do we provide students with\, on the one hand\, the structure and transparency they need to meet expectations\, and on the other hand\, enough flexibility to support their own agency and growth in learning? \nParticipants will leave able to: \n\nName (several) features of an inclusive course syllabus\nExplain the three key elements of transparent assignment design\nDescribe an inclusive design practice they’d like to use (or strengthen) in upcoming course planning\n\n– – –\nNote that each session is offered in both an in-person and a virtual format. You may choose to register for the session(s) of interest to you\, in the format you prefer. Participants who attend all three sessions (in either format) and complete the post-session reflections are eligible to earn a digital badge of completion. \nThis event is partially funded via Academic Staff Group Professional Development awards.

SUMMARY:Active Teaching Lab | Writing\, AI and Rhetorical Thinking Across the Disciplines
DESCRIPTION:The explosion of accessible AI has reshaped the realm of learning\, particularly affecting undergraduate writing-intensive courses. Looming over all instructors is the question: if AI can write a “B-level” paper\, why should I expect students to struggle through the process of actually writing?\n\nDive into the future with Shevaun Watson and David Kocik on April 3rd\, as they present several potent strategies cultivated by writing specialists in the Department of English. Decrease cheating dilemmas\, amplify writing dexterity\, and steer students toward higher learning outcomes. Engage in hands-on experimentation during the session\, empowering you to forge innovative activities next semester!\n\nThis session will be held both in-person and online via Zoom. Registration is not required. However\, if you plan to attend in-person please register below – so we know how many much food to order\n\nCan’t make it to campus? No problems – Join us via this link!

SUMMARY:Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT)
DESCRIPTION:Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) is an internationally acclaimed framework that assists instructors with designing and implementing transparent assignments to improve and promote student success and engagement. By building transparency into the learning process\, we start to give our students the tools to see how they are learning\, not just what they are learning. Join us in this session to learn more about how transparent assessment design benefits students and instructors\, what the TILT research demonstrates\, and for the chance to redesign an existing assessment using the TILT Framework.
