Are you interested in learning how it might or might not support your work in the classroom in responsible and equitable ways? Join us for this year’s Disillusioning AI Fellowship for Universities of Wisconsin Educators! \n\n\n\nWith the advent of generative AI\, teachers are faced with the difficult choice of trusting advanced technologies to take advantage of their transformative potential. Trusting educational AI is getting harder as these systems become less transparent\, less predictable\, and raise equity concerns. During this fellowship\, you will have the opportunity to collaborate and learn alongside fellow educators in higher education across the University of Wisconsin system to improve your AI literacy\, engage in hands-on exploration of AI tools\, and discuss what you’re learning with colleagues. SUMMARY:Scantron is Sunsetting: What Comes Next?
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nAs university-wide Scantron support winds down\, many instructors are facing a crossroads in their assessment strategy. This 60-minute “Lunch and Learn” provides a space to discuss and prepare for the transition. From 12:00–12:30\, we will address departmental licensing options for alternative scanning software\, how to maximize Canvas Quizzes for high-stakes testing\, and digital “paper-to-cloud” tools that replicate the Scantron experience. We will also provide resources and options to modify exams in the age of generative AI—including “AI-resistant” question design\, digital proctoring\, and alternative question design. DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nAfter more than two decades of dedicated service to UW–Milwaukee and a remarkable forty-year career in higher education\, CASL’s very own\, Connie Schroeder will be retiring in May.  \n\n\n\nWe invite all faculty\, staff\, and students that have known or worked with Connie to join CASL for a celebratory Open House Retirement Party on Wednesday\, May 6\, 2026 in Engelmann Hall B73 from 12:00–2:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nRegardless of whether you are able to join us in person to celebrate Connie\, we invite you to take a moment to share words of appreciation on her impact on UWM’s teaching and learning.  \n\n\n\nSince joining UWM in 2002\, Connie has been a foundational force in shaping the university’s culture of teaching excellence\, equity\, and student success. As the Senior Consultant for Instructional and Organizational Development\, her influence has reached every corner of campus\, where she has mentored generations of instructors and partnered with various departments to embed high-impact\, evidence-based practices into the UWM curriculum. \n\n\n\nConnie’s impact extended well beyond the boundaries of our campus as a recognized consultant\, speaker\, and scholar. Her 2011 book\, Coming in from the Margins\, helped redefine the strategic role of teaching centers in higher education transformation\, while her leadership within the POD Network earned her the prestigious Robert Menges Award on two separate occasions. At UWM\, she was instrumental in leading signature professional development programs\, including the creation of the Course Design Institute\, Educators’ Institute\, multiple certificate programs\, and heralding the Active Learning Classroom Initiative on campus\, leaving behind valuable institutional infrastructure that will benefit the university for years to come. \n\n\n\nWhat truly distinguishes Connie is the combination of professional depth and personal warmth she brought to her work every day. Whether spearheading campus-wide initiatives or providing thoughtful one-on-one consultations\, she has always remained a steadfast advocate for faculty and student engagement. Her colleagues at CASL and throughout the university will remember her tireless work ethic and the mentorship she has extended to everyone she encountered. DESCRIPTION:Custom AI Without the Cloud: Privacy and Power for Every Instructor\n\n\n\nJoseph Retzer\n\n\n\nWhile off-the-shelf AI like ChatGPT are popular\, many instructors worry about data privacy and generic “one-size-fits-all” limitations. In this session\, Joseph Retzer will demonstrate how he created a secure\, custom AI assistant that runs entirely offline to keep sensitive student and research data private\, while still being able to summarize complex data and generate professional reports. SUMMARY:A Workshop on Teaching Transferable Skills and Work integrated Learning from Middle School to College
DESCRIPTION:Learn techniques for teaching transferable skills (e.g.\, teamwork\, critical thinking) and work-integrated learning through re-imagining the nature of human competency\, how people best learn complex skills\, and how to re-design teaching activities accordingly. After a brief introduction to sociocultural learning theory and limitations with the dominant notion of generic “soft skills” you will learn how to articulate and then teach key skills relevant to your courses that are embedded in disciplinary content and cultural contexts. Strategies for incorporating work-integrated learning (WIL) via authentic workplace problems\, job search strategies and career exploration will also be discussed. This 3-week course is designed for educators teaching grades 6-12 and instructors at the college or university level. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Series

Join us as music professor Gillian Rodger shares how she transformed potential challenges with AI into opportunities for developing critical information literacy. Through a carefully designed unit that combines AI experimentation with library research skills\, Rodger demonstrates how analyzing AI’s strengths and limitations can enhance students’ understanding of academic research. DESCRIPTION:Workshop 1 – Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy & Prompt Engineering\n\n\n\nA four-part OPID Webinar series for systemwide faculty and instructors starting in Fall 2024. Webinars will be 90 – 120 minutes long and live-streamed on Zoom.\n\n\n\nBoth faculty and students needed a new digital literacy to apply the increased critical thinking needed in the internet age\, and AI literacy is a critical new skill every teacher and graduate needs. The two largest complaints about AI responses are that they are either wrong or boring\, but both are often the result of poor or bland prompting. AI prompts need to provide more human context and be more literal than the ones we tend to use with a search engine. Since AI uses natural human language\, it also needs human-level communication precision: asking your AI to slow down and think more carefully can greatly improve results! The features of better prompts– task\, format\, voice and context–are direct extensions of the critical writing and thinking skills we already teach and value. This summit will focus on integrating instructor driven high-impact practices and inclusive excellence strategies within the classroom\, in alignment with UWM’s 2030 Strategic Plan\, which prioritizes student success as a moral imperative and a critical pathway to generational change. \n\n\n\nEvent Outcomes\n\n\n\nParticipants\, collaboratively with their teams\, will discuss key barriers and opportunities related to student success in their units\, identify a set of initiatives to enhance retention and graduation rates for students in their programs\, and develop an action plan for incorporating high-impact\, inclusive teaching practices into their curriculum. DESCRIPTION:Join us February 7th for an exploration of recent AI advancements and how they’ll shape your classroom in 2024. David Delgado will begin the session showcasing impactful new tools and AI capabilities that are continuing to reshape the educational landscape: including Microsoft Copilot\, AI data manipulation\, image generation\, and mobile AI integration. \nAfterwards\, we’ll dive into a hands-on showcase of these tools and a collaborative discussion to exchange ideas and strategies. Finally\, we’ll wrap up with real-world examples of how educators outside the UW system are utilizing AI and navigating its challenges into 2024.
