May 11, 2021  |  News & Events, Sad News, Timely Announcements

Dear Colleagues,

I am sending sad news of the passing of three members of our UWM community. These messages were shared with me by colleagues from the UWM Libraries, Finance and Administrative Affairs, and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Katherine Olivia Bowes
Katherine Bowes, Senior Academic Librarian in the UWM Libraries, passed away on April 24, 2021. Kathy was a valued member of the UWM Libraries and worked in a variety of roles since joining the staff in July 2000. Most recently, she was a member of User Services, providing research subject expertise for art, architecture, foreign languages, and the Honors College.

Kathy was committed to providing the highest quality of service to all UWM students and faculty. Whether volunteering to judge a student poster, consulting with a student on a research assignment, orienting the library’s cohort of National Taiwan Normal University interns to Milwaukee culture, or providing campus directions, Kathy gave each individual her full attention and time.

As an alumna of the UWM School of Information Studies, she understood the value of work experiences in landing a job, so she took great pride in the many references she provided for her student employees through the years. Never at a loss for a witty comment or interesting fact, Kathy is greatly missed by her library and UWM colleagues.

For additional information, including details about services and memorial, please see Kathy’s obituary online.
Todd Lore
Todd Lore, Locksmith in Facility Services, passed away on April 26, 2021. Todd was well liked on campus. He was a hard-working individual who was at his best when he had lots to do. He was as extremely knowledgeable as a locksmith and his skillset will be missed. Those of us who knew Todd best knew he lived his best life every day. Either at home or at work Todd was full of energy, happy to get to know you and ready to help in any way he could. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Jeffrey E. Ollswang
Jeffrey Ollswang, Professor Emeritus of Architecture in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UW – Milwaukee, passed away on April 7, 2021. Jeff received his B. Arch degree from Cooper Union and his M.Arch and MS in Building Sciences from the University of Oregon.

As an early member of the original team of professors who built the school of Architecture from its inception in the 70’s, Jeff spent the bulk of his career as an architect and professor at UWM until his retirement in 2011.

Jeff taught at the University of Arizona and the University of Oregon before joining the nascent School of Architecture in 1972. Jeff’s professional work focused on acoustics and lighting in buildings. He is well known for his architectural illustration and book on controlling sound in buildings. He also worked with his colleague Larry Witzling coordinating design competitions. He advised design competitions for the Astronauts Memorial and the World Trade Center Memorial, among many others.

Jeff made a strong impact on everyone over his 40 years at SARUP. He was an entertainer and storyteller who happened to teach. While knowledgeable and proven in his field professionally, Jeff will also be remembered for his sense of humor and helpful demeanor toward students, coworkers and, frankly, anyone who would listen.

For additional information, please see Jeff’s obituary online.

Our condolences to Kathy’s, Todd’s, and Jeff’s families and to the many others whose lives they touched.

Take care,

Johannes
