May 21, 2021  |  News & Events, Sad News, Timely Announcements

Dear Colleagues,

I am sending sad news of the passing of two members of our UWM community, shared with me by colleagues in the College of General Studies and the School of Continuing Education.

Jean M. Kelley
Jean M. Kelley, who served as Campus Administrative Support staff at UWM at Washington County in the College of General Studies, died unexpectedly on May 18, 2021.

Jean worked at the campus since 2002 in a number of positions including the bookstore, university relations, and continuing education. She stepped into the role of providing administrative support in 2016 and helped the campus transition to UWM. Born in Port Washington, Wisconsin, she resided in West Bend, Wisconsin, near the campus. Campus Administrator Paul Price writes that “she was the enduring and smiling face of the campus.”

For additional information, including details on May 21 funeral services, see Jean’s obituary online. The Washington County Campus Foundation has established a site to take donations to Jean’s family. In the Notes section on PayPal, note that you are designating your gift to Jean and her family. Cards and donations can also be sent to Dr. Paul Price at the Washington County campus.

Cheryl V. Mitchell
Cheryl V. Mitchell, Director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in UWM’s School of Continuing Education, passed away on May 13, 2021.

Cheryl earned a BBA in Finance, Investments and Banking from UW-Madison, and her MBA in Strategy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Business Management. Cheryl held several positions in the private sector and also served as a business consultant and life coach before coming to UW-Milwaukee. She joined the School of Continuing Education’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) as an Associate Outreach Specialist in January 2016 and later became the Director of the SBDC, centering on finance, strategy, and new business development. Her colleagues shared that as a champion for business owners in the community, Cheryl graced their lives in many ways. Her passion and dedication made a significant impact and lasting impression on clients and colleagues alike.

For more information, see Cheryl’s obituary online. Services will be held on Monday, May 24 at North Pointe United Methodist Church, 3825 Erie Street, in Racine, WI. Visitation will be from 9:30 – 11 a.m., with funeral services following at 11 a.m.

Our condolences to Jean’s and Cheryl’s families and to the many others whose lives they touched.

Take care,

Johannes
