May 31, 2019  |  News & Events, Sad News, Timely Announcements

Colleagues,

I share with you the sad news that Robert Burkert, Professor Emeritus of Graphic Arts, passed away earlier this spring, on March 8, 2019.

Dr. Burkert began his career at UW-Milwaukee in 1956. He served as a professor of printmaking, painting and drawing, and eventually served as the area head of Graphics at UWM. He retired and was granted Emeritus status in 1993.

Many students remember Dr. Burkert’s dedication to teaching. During his tenure, he received grants to study monoprints and photo silkscreen techniques, and to develop innovations in teaching. He received multiple awards, grants and commissions throughout his career.

Dr. Burkert’s work is represented in many museums and galleries in the U.S. and abroad. His work is reproduced in several publications as well. More details about Dr. Burkert’s professional and personal background can be found in his obituary, which is online.

Our condolences to Robert’s family and to the many others whose lives he touched.

Take care,
Johannes
