Colleagues,

I share with you sad news of the passing of two members of our UWM community.

Eugene K. “Gene” Braun

Eugene Braun, Associate Professor Emeritus of Biology at UW-Waukesha (now UWM at Waukesha), passed away on September 23, 2020.

Gene received his master’s degree in biology from Northern Illinois University. He began teaching at the Waukesha campus in 1969, and during a part of his time at the campus served as Chair of the Biology Department. Gene taught at UW-Waukesha for over three decades until his retirement in 2001. He was compassionate and generous, and he enjoyed working with people, especially people with disabilities.

For additional information, please see Gene’s obituary online. Our condolences to Gene’s family and to the many others whose lives he touched.

Timothy Bowen Patrick

Dr. Timothy Patrick, Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at UW-Milwaukee, passed away on September 21, 2020.

Tim received his MS in Computer Science and PhD in Philosophy/Logic from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he also completed postdoctoral studies in Medical Informatics through a National Library of Medicine fellowship. Tim taught at the University of Missouri before joining the UWM College of Health Sciences in 2005. He was instrumental in establishing CHS’s Health Informatics and Administration Department and he chaired the department for five years. He moved to the College of Engineering and Applied Science in 2018, where he was part of the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department and continued his work in informatics with a focus on edge computing. Tim retired from UWM this past June.

During his career at UWM, Tim supervised 10 PhD students and mentored many students in their research. He also provided outstanding mentoring to faculty and students during a time in which UWM launched and developed the state’s only interdisciplinary Biomedical and Health Informatics PhD program. Officially, he served on the program’s steering committee.

For additional information, please see Tim’s obituary online. Our condolences to Tim’s family, including his wife Lillian Folk, adjunct professor in the College of Health Sciences, and to the many others whose lives he touched.

Take care,

Johannes
