Dear Colleagues,

I share with you sad news from the Department of Educational Psychology in the School of Education. Professor Emeritus Anthony “Tony” Hains passed away last Thursday, February 17. He was born April 13, 1954 and joined the faculty at UWM in 1987 as a member of the Counseling Psychology program. Tony earned his PhD from the University of Notre Dame in Developmental Psychology and received a postdoctoral position in Clinical Psychology in Kansas, where he became an expert in cognitive behavioral interventions. There, he met his wife of 37 years, Ann Hains, who was a professor in the Department of Exceptional Education at UWM until she retired in 2007. He is survived by Ann, his daughter, Anastasia, and the many friends and colleagues in the Department and at UWM, as well as the innumerable students he impacted during 31 years of teaching.

Tony’s lifelong dedication to the behavioral health of children and adolescents was evident in his research on treatment adherence for youth with cystic fibrosis and in his work at Children’s Hospital, where he had hospital privileges for several years. He helped to shape many, many masters and doctoral students who learned from him how to be good therapists. He taught them to “look at this from a different perspective,” and to be brief, “keep it under 60 seconds!” Tony was a wonderful colleague to the faculty in Educational Psychology, where he served in many roles, including Chair of the counseling area and Chair of the department. He was always ready to take on extra tasks if it helped the program or students. He was also a great role model in balancing his work with his desire to be an author of youth occult horror (Book 5 of the Nightshade Chronicles was just published in January 2022), and as an amateur meteorologist, who could always tell you what weather was heading our way. He will be sorely missed.

We share our condolences with Tony’s family and the many others whose lives he touched. For additional information, please see Tony’s obituary. Donations can be made to MCW Cancer research or the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in lieu of flowers.

Take care,

Johannes
