Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

Michelle Corbett (CUPH) and David Pate (Social Welfare) received $1M Community Impact Grants from the Wisconsin Partnership Program for their initiatives to improve health and health equity across Wisconsin. Well done, Michelle and David!

Phyllis King (Academic Affairs) was appointed President-Elect of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP), a national professional association for administrators, educators, and others who were concerned with critical issues affecting allied health education. ASAHP’s membership consists of 116 academic institutions and four professional associations. Congratulations, Phyllis!

Sara VanderHaagen’s (Communication) book, Children’s Biographies of African American Women: Rhetoric, Public Memory, and Agency, was published in November by the University of South Carolina Press. Well done, Sara!

The Week

Monday

I start the week meeting with Lubar School dean candidate Yash Gupta, followed by a meeting on the proposed Freshwater University, a meeting with the Academic Staff Committee, and the Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet meets. I will also make brief remarks at the English Language Academy event. Later, the Chancellor and I meet with AAUP leadership, and then I have my monthly meeting with Kristin Roosevelt – she is the chair of the Academic Staff Committee.

Tuesday

I have meetings with Trudy Turner, Val Klump, Scott Gronert, and Stan Stojkovic. In the afternoon I will attend part of the University Committee meeting (I have bi-weekly meetings with the UC) followed by a short stop at the Multicultural Network and a wrap-up interview with Dr. Gupta.

Wednesday

This morning, I have meetings with Tom Lipinski, and Joan Prince. There is also a Campus Budget Planning meeting. In the afternoon, I’ll present the charge to the NMDSI (Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute) Endowed Professor search and screen committee, I have my monthly meeting with Kim Litwack, and my weekly meeting with the Chancellor.

It’s a quiet day on campus and I’m attending to administrative tasks and a few (for now) meetings with my direct reports.

Announcements

Thanksgiving Recess Transportation Services

The Prowl Line will operate on Wednesday from 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. Service to Upark lots stops at 6 p.m. Prowl Line is closed on Thanksgiving Day and is on-demand from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Friday, November 23. Riders may call (414) 935-6900 for a ride. Regular service resumes on Saturday.

Asian Studies Brown Bag

Yi Chen (Zhejiang Wanli University) presents, “Inheritance of Vernacular Architecture Based on Cultural Genes,” on Thursday, November 29 at 12 p.m. in Garland 104.

Service Opportunity

The Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research has issued a call for volunteers to support Habitat for Humanity in Sauk County, WI from December 1 through December 15 for a flood recovery service project. Transportation, most meals, and lodging provided. Contact Jordan Davis (davis336@uwm.edu) for more information.

MCTS Open Forum

MCTS is holding an open forum to present and discuss MCTS NEXT, an initiative to provide faster service with more connections and increased accessibility. The 90-minute forum will include a presentation on the initiative, followed by a Q&A session, and a chance to view plans and displays. The forums will be held on Monday, December 3 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Locations have not yet been determined.

Holiday Social

Just a reminder that the Annual Faculty and Staff Holiday Social will take place on Wednesday, December 5 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. RSVP.

Call for First-Year Seminar Instructors

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) is looking for faculty and instructional academic staff to teach First-Year Seminar courses in fall 2019. 12/1 Deadline.

CVP Emergency Ride Program

Faculty and staff with a Commuter Value Pass are eligible for the MCTS Emergency Ride program.

Bicycle Registration

The City of Milwaukee has provided UWM with bicycle registration stickers. Registering your bike may aid in its return if stolen. Registration stickers contain instructions on how to register your bicycle and are available for free pickup from Transportation Services (Student Union WG25) and the UWM Police Department (3410 N. Maryland Avenue).

Times Higher Education Survey

The Times Higher Education’s annual Global Academic Reputation Survey is now out. If you receive an invitation, I encourage you to take the opportunity to provide your expert input. Please check your inbox and spam folder for an invitation from TimesHigherEducation@surveys.elsevier.com.

Annual Alumni Employee Awards

Nominate an exceptional faculty or staff member for an Alumni Employee Award! Any current UWM employee or student can submit a nomination using the online form. Nominations are due by Friday, January 25. Please note: All nominees must be current UWM employees who are graduates of UWM.

Other

Ireland beat New Zealand 16-9, at home in Dublin, in Saturday’s rugby test match. They must now be the best team in the world. And my money is on the West Indies women’s cricket team to win the World Cup.
