Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs. My next update will be on June 1.

Town Hall Meeting

A reminder that there will be a virtual town hall meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. this Thursday for UWM faculty and staff. The Chancellor and several campus leaders will focus on planning for a fully operational fall semester and will be available to answer questions. Please join the town hall meeting here on May 20 at 9 a.m. The same link can be used for viewing the meeting later if you are unable to watch it live.

Important Message from the Registrar’s Office

The Registrar’s Office has provided an update on the services offered by the Testing Center. COVID accelerated some operational changes that affect exam scanning services provided by the Testing Center. If you are planning on using the scanning services, please read the full message here.

Kudos

Congratulations to the Institute for Child and Family Well-Being, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this month. The institute is a community-university partnership between Children’s Wisconsin and the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare that aims to improve the lives of children and families with complex challenges by implementing effective programs, conducting cutting-edge research, engaging communities, and promoting systems change.

The WiscAMP STEM-Inspire Program at UWM, in collaboration with the Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence, debuted at the worldwide National Science Foundation’s STEM for All Video Showcase. Well done!

Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece (English and Film Studies) and Richard Grusin’s (English and Center for 21st Century Studies) co-edited book, “Ends of Cinema,” was longlisted for the 2021 Kraszna-Krauz Moving Image Book AwardCongratulations, Jocelyn and Richard!

UW System Awards

UWM is accepting nominations for two UW System awards: the Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award and the Dr. P.B. Poorman Award for Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ+ People. UWM’s internal deadline for nominations is Friday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m. Use this form to submit your nominations to Interim Chief DEI Officer Chia Vang (vangcy@uwm.edu). See past sample statements and more information about the awards.

Milwaukee Athletics

“Built by MKE” is a website feature started during the 2020-21 school year by the Milwaukee Athletic Department. The series, presented by Educators Credit Union, features former student athletes, and looks back on their time in Milwaukee. It includes updates on where they are now and what they have been doing since graduating from UWM. The next entry is former Milwaukee volleyball player Monica (Ferguson) Smith.

Bella Passamani and Madeline Worgull of the Milwaukee women’s swimming team have been recognized as members of the 2020-21 Lubar 25, a program identifying business students dedicated to academic success, entrepreneurship, volunteering, and campus involvement at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Patrick Baldwin, Jr. has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Milwaukee men’s basketball team. The 6-foot 10-inch forward comes to Milwaukee after playing at Hamilton Sussex High School. He is a consensus five-star recruit and one of the highest-ranked players of the 2021 class.

The Week

Monday

I start the week with the Coronavirus Management Team (CMT) Leadership meeting, followed by my weekly meeting with Robin Van Harpen, a meeting with the University Staff Committee to discuss the 2030 Plan, and meetings with the Ombuds Council and the Academic Staff Committee. Then I have the Chancellor’s Core Team and Executive and Expanded Cabinet meetings, my monthly meeting with Jonathan Hanes, my weekly staff meeting, my weekly check-in with Dev Venugopalan and Laura Pedrick, an All-School meeting with College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, and Zilber School of Public Health, and a Freshwater Collaborative Steering Committee planning meeting.

Tuesday

In the morning, I have an M3 meeting with Chancellor Mone, my monthly meeting with Dave Clark and Kay Eilers, my one-on-one with Nancy Nelson, and a check-in with Dev Venugopalan. In the afternoon, I meet with the University Committee, I have my one-on-one with the Chancellor and my bi-weekly meeting with Mark Harris.

Wednesday

Today, I have the Deans Morning Meeting, a June Board of Regents planning meeting, a meeting with Student Association leadership, one-on-ones with Nancy Frank and Michael Doylen, and an All-School meeting with School of Architecture and Urban Planning, School of Freshwater Sciences, and Graduate School.

Thursday

In the morning, I have another CMT Leadership meeting, followed by the Faculty and Staff Town Hall, a budget meeting with the College of Letters and Science, and my monthly meeting with Kim Litwack and Amy Harley. In the afternoon, I have a Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute Core Team meeting, a meeting with David Gilbert and campus leadership, a Campus Budget Planning meeting, and a Campus Space Planning meeting.

Friday

Today, I have the monthly Integrated Support Services Project Sponsors Update meeting, followed by a Connected Systems Institute discussion, the UW System Provosts Council meeting, and an All-School meeting with School of Education, Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, Peck School of the Arts, and Office of Research.

Announcements

Book Launch

Please join the Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies on Thursday, May 20 at 7 p.m. for the launch of Simon Bronner’s book, “Jewish Cultural Studies,” which aims to spark a discussion of the distinguishing features of Jewish culture and the ways it has been studied, and often misrepresented and maligned. Free, but registration is required.
