Good morning, colleagues and welcome to 2019! I hope you all had a good break. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.
New Dean, Lubar School of Business
I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Kaushal Chari as Dean of the Lubar School of Business, effective as of June 2019. Dr. Kaushal Chari comes to UWM from the University of South Florida’s Muma College of Business, where he has served as the associate dean of research and professional programs. Previously he served as the chair of the Information Systems & Decision Sciences Department from 2006-2013.
His research program encompasses software engineering, business intelligence, and distributed systems. Dr. Chari obtained a B.Tech in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, followed by an MBA and Ph.D. in Business Administration (with a focus on management information systems) from the University of Iowa.
I congratulate the Search and Screen Committee, chaired by John Reisel, for its outstanding work, and I thank Dean Kanti Prasad for his excellent leadership of the School.
Kudos
Alexis Jordan (Ph.D. student in Anthropology) was selected to be a 2019 National Humanities without Walls Predoctoral Fellow. She also won the Carew-Rendle History Prize awarded by the Royal Cornwall Museum for best essay in Cornish history or prehistory. Well done, Alexis!
LeRoy Stoner (Theatre) will be honored by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival at its Regional conference on January 12th. He is being awarded the Gold Medalion Award, which honors lifetime achievements and excellence in the field of Theatre and Theatre in Higher Education. Kudos for this prestigious honor, LeRoy!
Tanya Joosten (Academic Affairs) received a $49,981 grant from the Spencer Foundation for her proposal entitled, “Cross-institutional study of ethnic and racial minority students’ readiness and preparedness for postsecondary online learning and the impact on student outcomes,” which will continue the work of the National Research Center on Distance Education and Technological Advancements originally funded by FIPSE. Congratulations, Tanya!
The Zilber School of Public Health has been selected as the YMCA’s Healthy Living Award recipient for 2019. This award is sponsored by GE Healthcare and will be presented at the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast on Monday, January 21 from 7 – 9 a.m. at the Italian Community Center. Excellent news!
The Week
Monday
I start the week with my standing meeting with Robin Van Harpen, followed by a New Budget Model meeting with Finance and Administrative Affairs, and the Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet meeting. Later, I have a New Budget Model meeting with the Office of Research, my bi-weekly meeting with Mark Harris, and my weekly staff meeting.
Tuesday
This morning, I have a Connected Systems Institute Budget meeting, my monthly meeting with Michael Doylen, and a New Budget Model meeting with General Education Administration. In the afternoon, I have my monthly meeting with Kim Litwack, and a few meetings with direct reports.
Wednesday
Today, I have my standing meeting with Brian Thompson, my monthly meeting with Nancy Nelson, a meeting with Regents at MATC, a meeting of the Chancellor’s Council on Hispanic Serving Initiatives Steering Team, and my weekly meeting with the Chancellor.
Thursday
The day starts with my monthly meeting with Scott Gronert, followed by the Connected Systems Institute Steering Committee meeting and the ISS Hub 2 All-Team Implementation meeting. Later, I’ll make remarks at the 4th Annual UWM Teaching and Learning Symposium Luncheon, and I have meetings with Joan Prince and Kanti Prasad.
Friday
I have monthly meetings with Brett Peters and Alan Shoho and will attend to administrative tasks.

M-Cubed Update
You’re invited to a two-year impact update and community conversation on how M-cubed is transforming the future of Milwaukee through education. Learn what the three largest public education institutions (Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Area Technical College, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) have done, where we’re going, and engage in the work ahead.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 9 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at MATC Downtown Milwaukee Campus (1015 N. 6th Street, 6th Floor, Room M605). Parking vouchers will be provided for the BMO Harris parking structure on 6th Street.

I am out of the office next week, so my next update will be on January 22. India won their first ever test series in Australia and it is just amazing to see how much the Dutch invest in their biking infrastructure.
