August 13, 2018  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s update from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

larger-than-life display showcases the crucial role UWM plays in the community for about 7 million travelers who pass through Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport every year. Kudos to University Relations integrated marketing team with Kelly Grulkowski serving as the lead designer!

Veena Brown and Amy Tegeler, both Lubar School of Business Accounting faculty, will receive a $7,000 grant from the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) for their work on, “Giving Accounting a Second Chance: Factors Influencing Returning Students to Choose Accounting and Become CPAs.” This project will examine the call for high-quality, broad-based accounting professionals with a more diverse set of skills and the shortage of MSA students. Congratulations, Veena and Amy.

Milwaukee Athletics

Both Milwaukee Panthers men’s and women’s basketball teams held successful summer golf outings in the month of July. The Black & Gold Network joined in on the fun. Check out the recaps and interviews.

The Week

Monday

I have my weekly meeting with Robin Van Harpen, followed by meetings with Kristian O’Connor, Joan Prince, and the Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet. In the afternoon, I have my weekly staff meeting and CEMAT meets.

Tuesday

I have meetings with Tom Luljak, Alberto Maldonado, and Bob Greenstreet. We (Katie Miota, Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska, Mark Harris, Gesele Durham & I) begin a round of 90-minute meetings with school and college leadership teams, focusing on student success and research excellence. The main purpose of these meetings is to discuss the goals of each school/college related to research output and UWM’s Outstanding Learning Environment goals/metrics focused on student success from recruitment to graduation.  The first meeting is with the School of Information Studies, followed by the School of Education.

Wednesday

I have meetings with Val Klump and Tim Grundl, Stan Stojkovic, Nancy Nelson, Ron Perez, and Scott Emmons. I have another student success and research excellence meeting, this time with the College of Nursing.

Thursday-Friday

I will be off for two days.

UWM Brand Day Survey
In past years, University Relations has organized UWM’s Brand Day, which has served as a resource for information on the UWM brand and marketing resources. Looking at the future of this event, we are exploring new options and ideas to make it as useful as it can be for campus partners and therefore, would love to hear your feedback. Please take a short survey, which will take just a couple of minutes to complete. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research

Please join the Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research (CCBLLR) in a service event at Lloyd Barbee Montessori School on Wednesday, August 15. Volunteers will be assisting teachers in classroom set up. Please specify whether or not you will need transportation when completing the sign-up form.

Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning: Canvas

Instructors will only have Canvas as a learning management system starting January 1, 2020. Every instructor (whose schedule permits) should take Canvas: Basics because it covers the fundamentals such as how to navigate in Canvas, post course files in Canvas, and move content from D2L to Canvas. At the end of each Canvas: Basics workshop, CETL staff will be available to assist you in importing your course content into Canvas. Register for Canvas: Basics today!

Aging Research Collaborative Team

An Interdisciplinary Aging Research Seminar, “Soft and Continuum Robots: Potential, Trends, and Challenges,” will take place today from 10 – 11 a.m. in EMS Room 250. More information.
