Educational Talent Search

Educational Talent Search Program is a Federally Funded Program located on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The program identifies and assists first-generation and low-income middle and high school students in Milwaukee who have the potential to succeed in higher education. Talent Search provides academic advising, career exploration, and financial counseling. The program serves 705 students per academic year, a student can enter the program as a 6th grader and continue in the program until they graduate from high school. Talent Search also tracks students for six years after they graduate from high school.

The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds to complete high school and enroll in and complete their post-secondary education. Talent Search has target schools which are as follows: Bay View, Bradley Tech, Morse Marshall, South Division, Riverside, Washington High School, Milwaukee Academy of Science, Wisconsin Conservatory of Lifelong Learning, Hartford, Lincoln Center of the Arts, Milwaukee College Preparatory, and Story. The program also has a target area in the city of Milwaukee which consist of; Good Hope Road on the north, 92nd Street on the west, Lincoln Avenue on the south and east towards the Lake.

Talent Search provides students opportunities to participate in various academic related workshops, assistance in preparing for college entrance exams, mentoring activities, tutoring services, career exploration, exposure to college campus, information on post-secondary institutions; education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of students, guidance on and assistance in secondary school reentry, and entry into general educational development programs or post-secondary education. Advisors assistance students with completing college admissions, housing, scholarship and financial aid applications. Talent Search provides students with resources available to them once they enter post-secondary enrollment. In addition the program provides opportunities for workshops for the family of participants.

Eligibility

  • Students must be in the 6th grad and at least 11 years old.
  • Students must attend a target school or live in the target area.
  • Two-thirds of the participants must be students who are low-income and potential first-generation college students. Please contact the Talent Search Office for specific low-income levels.
