In August, 1896, gold was discovered in northwestern Canada at Dawson City. What soon
followed was a stampede of over 100,000 people in a massive gold rush to make their fortune,
with over 40,000 settling in the city as residents. As the city swelled with people, it became the
last stop in the film distribution line for turn of the century American cinema. Hundreds upon
hundreds of films came into Dawson City to be viewed by its residents, but many of these films
never left. That is until 1978, when a construction crew working in Dawson City made an
amazing discovery, the last copies of 533 silent film reels buried beneath Dawson City’s frozen

back to the big screen, a century after their debut.
