Film Festivals

At the Union Cinema, we are proud to host film festivals from many cultures around the world. Presented in partnerships with groups whose love and care has made these festivals a reality, we are proud to support Milwaukee’s culture of celebrating diversity and everything that makes us all unique.

Annual LGBT Film/Video Festival

For over 30 years, the Annual LGBT Film/Video Festival has been premiering films by, for, and about the LGBT+ community. From short films to features, documentaries to fiction, national to international, this festival strives to encompass all it can and succeeds with profound effect, becoming one of Milwaukee’s most adored film festivals.

Annual Festival of Films in French

While much of the world contributed to the creation of motion pictures, many credit French Lumière brothers Auguste and Louis with the creation of films as they are known today. Their Cinematograph became the first true motion picture camera, projector, and printer as would be recognized today, creating the legend of the first every cinema screening with the brothers film L’arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat (The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station), a film that legend says had audience members running from the cinema in fear.

The Festival of Films in French pays great homage to France’s film legacy by showcasing new and old films alike in the great French language for all to see.

Muslim Film Festival

One of the only Muslim Film Festivals in the entire country, the Union Cinema was very fortunate to have recently helped bring this spectacular film festival to Wisconsin for it’s Milwaukee premiere.

For it’s premiering year, the Muslim Film Festival screened a few of the most renowned international films of 2015, including The Wanted 18, Girafada, and Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

Italian Film Festival – Milwaukee

Italian Film Festival USA is a traveling film festival that makes its way around the United States touching many major cities with it’s premieres of award winning Italian cinema. Milwaukee is honored to be counted among the cities this festival is able to reach and it is the Union Cinema that is proud to host them when they arrive.

Featuring a selection of some of the best films to come out of Italy, the Italian Film Festival – Milwaukee provides a look in to Italian culture through the magic of film.

Ann Arbor Film Festival

The Ann Arbor Film Festival is the longest-running independent and experimental film festival in North America, premiering annually in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Internationally recognized and one of a handful of Academy Award qualifying festivals, the Ann Arbor Film Festival features various digital and film print programs that tour the world highlighting some of the best submissions the festival receives each year.

The Union Cinema along with the UWM Department of Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres works every year to bring at least one of these Ann Arbor Film Festival touring programs to the Milwaukee community for a truly special evening.

Student Film and Video Festival

This short bi-annual festival at the end of each semester is as close to home as home can get, featuring a collection of short films from the UWM Department of Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres outstanding student body.

Not only encapsulating everything the UWM Film Department values within it’s students, but also demonstrating the accomplishments the entire University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee seeks to bring out in it’s learners, the Student Film and Video Festival represents our campus community in the most special of ways.
