The Short Fiction of Ana María Shua: A Bilingual Reading and Conversation

October 23, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Ana María Shua has published over eighty books in numerous genres, but she is particularly well-known in the Spanish-speaking world on both sides of the Atlantic as “the Queen of the Microstory.” A graduate of the University of Buenos Aires, Shua went into exile in France during the military junta of 1976-83, where she worked for the Spanish magazine Cambio 16. She published her first novel, Soy paciente, on her return to Argentina in 1980. She has since received numerous national and international awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, and is one of Argentina’s premier living writers, with her stories appearing in anthologies worldwide, and her works translated into many languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Korean, Japanese, Bulgarian, and Serbian.

Her presentation in Milwaukee forms part of a series on Jewish Latin America associated with the Jewish Latin America Collection in Special Collections at the UWM Libraries. Other supporters of this event are The Jewish Latin America Collection Associates, UWM Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, UWM Center for International Education, UWM College of Letters and Science, UWM Master of Arts in Language, Literature, and Translation, the Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies, and Sigma Delta Pi National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.
