The UWM Writing Project, Advanced Teen Writing Academy, Gr. 9-12

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Writing Project is an active chapter of the National Writing Project (NWP). Founded in 1974, NWP’s ongoing mission is to provide writing teachers resources and training in order to cultivate new methods of teaching, research on teaching, and a professional community passionate about writing. Teacher-Consultants (TCs) participate in an accredited, graduate level Summer Institute, as well as smaller in-services throughout the year.
College for Kids/Teens’ partnership with the UWM Writing Project offers student writers a chance to work with three professionally and academically trained TCs per class! One instructor for every five or six students. These instructors utilize materials from the Writing Project to shape a classroom of supportive learning.

Advanced Teen Writing Academy
The UWMWP offers a follow-up academy for those students who have attended the Introductory Teen Writers’ Academy and who wish to have more focus on developing a particular project or genre. Open for aspiring writers entering high school, we will spend more time in small writing groups in order to help students work on an ongoing project. Our experienced writers and teachers will also teach genre specific workshop that build upon previous writing experience.

  • Build upon writing basics from three genres: poetry, short stories, and essays/non-fiction
  • Learn advanced writing and revision techniques used by professional writers.
  • Meet and share writing with young writers from throughout the county
  • Learn and discuss the process of getting work published
  • Engage in the full writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and performing

Like our Introductory Academy, we will also host a community event for writers to share your favorite pieces. Past participants are welcomed to attend! We recommend new writers see our listing for the Introductory Teen Writers’ Academy.

Also, since this is sponsored by the UWMWP, we have a low teacher-to-student ratios to help with a strong curriculum aimed at individual writing development.

There is a 30-minute, supervised lunch break every day. Please bring a bag lunch or, if you have permission to leave unattended, you can purchase lunch at the Student Union.

Dates and locations to be announced.
