Strategic Planning for Public Administrators

Strategic planning can be a powerful tool for organizations to make major decisions about their future activities. This workshop helps you strengthen your skills using strategic planning as a reliable management tool. Analyze a model to achieve a critical level of strategic thinking in your team, apply these tools to your own work, and identify next steps in developing an effective strategic plan.

This course can be applied to the Certificate in Public Administration.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the strategic planning process and its essential components
  • Identify the levels of thinking/planning/acting in organizations – and assess your own effectiveness at using the right mix of planning
  • Demonstrate key elements of the strategic planning process: assessing the present reality, conducting an environmental scan, developing a vision of the future, defining key governing organizational values/beliefs, identifying strategic issues, developing action goals/plans, developing operational plans, and monitoring and revising the plan
  • Identify common obstacles to effectively operationalizing a strategic plan
