Advanced Mediation Skills – Emotions: Anger, Fear, Sadness, Oh My!
Emotions are central to conflict. The expression of emotions may provoke behaviors that are detrimental or constructive to the mediation process. This includes the mediator’s response! Learn not to squelch emotions, but to listen to the purpose of the behavior. Resist the temptation to ignore emotions or jump to conclusions. Get strategies for slowing the process down, identifying underlying issues and being mindful of yourself. Help clients interpret the messages being sent for productive problem solving. Practice how to intervene without undermining self-determination or pushing an agenda.
