Bio

Nick Gelpi is the design principal and founder of GELPI Projects, a design firm dedicated to examining the relationships between material representations and building concepts. Gelpi’s design practice has won numerous design awards including first place in the international design competition for the new Wynwood Greenhouse Park in 2014, which is currently nearing construction in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. In 2016 his design collaboration with artist Markus Linnenbrink, titled House Paint Pavilion was nominated for a Mies Crown Hall of the Americas Prize(MCHAP) at IIT. His practice has recently won two AIA Miami Design awards, for built projects, and in 2014, Gelpi received a CURBED, YOUNG GUNS award naming him one of the top 10 Young Designers in America. Gelpi trained professionally in the New York office of Steven Holl Architects, and has previously taught at MIT, Ohio State University, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Florida International University in Miami Florida.

Lecture Summary

In this talk, Gelpi will present recent projects from his design practice in Miami Florida, highlighting consistent themes in his work, as well as discussing the unique influences on the tropics on his recent portfolio. Additionally Gelpi well as discuss concepts from his forthcoming book the architecture of full scale mockups and draw connections between his book and recent works.
