July 30, 2017 – August 5, 2017

The School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) Architecture Summer Camp is a week long educational program for exceptionally motivated high school students (grades 9-12) contemplating the study of architecture at the university level. Students live in the residence halls at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to get a true taste of college life.

The week’s activities are anchored by the design studio in which students develop three projects that address the fundamental issues of space-making in architecture. The projects introduce students to the creation and manipulation of space that is at the center of architectural practice.

Gil Snyder, AIA, Director
Tammy Taylor, Associate Director

Students will participate in studio sessions that are introductory to college studios, and receive one-on-one interaction with UWM SARUP professors.

Activities include walking tours of Milwaukee’s Downtown and East Side, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Urban Ecology Center, and other local architecture attractions. Also included are visits to professional architects’ offices and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Wingspread.

Throughout the week, students will gain hands-on experience with physical model making, design iteration, virtual computer modeling, and historic preservation.

Typical Summer Camp Agenda

The final day of the program is an exhibition of the studio work produced during the week. The exhibit is open to parents, guests, and students, and offers the young designers a chance to discuss their work and ideas with all interested parties, including SARUP faculty, working professionals, and SARUP students.

The exhibit includes a review, brunch and awards presentation.
