Bio

Kelly Bair is co-founder of BairBalliet and principal of Central Standard Office of Design. She is an assistant professor of Architecture at University of Illinois at Chicago. Bair is also co-founder of Possible Mediums, a collaborative of four Midwestern architects and educators interested in shaking up the context and format in which architecture is taught, produced, and engaged. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Most recently in the 1st Chicago Architecture Biennial (2015) and the 15th International Architecture Exhibition in the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2016) in collaboration with Kristy Balliet of Balliet Studio. Bair is a graduate of University of Colorado at Boulder and the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design.

Bio

Kristy Balliet is an architectural designer and assistant professor at The Ohio State University’s Knowlton School of Architecture. She is currently a design faculty member at SCI-Arc. She is the co-founder of BairBalliet and the co-chair of the Possible Mediums Project (a series of events showcasing design investigations based in speculative architectural mediums). From 2011-2006, Balliet was an assistant professor at The University of Applied Arts, Vienna in Studio Greg Lynn. While there she was the co-creator of the IoA Sliver lecture/gallery series and published the collected work of the studio in Visual Catalog: Greg Lynn’s Studio. She is a graduate of Philadelphia University and the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design and has practiced architecture in Philadelphia at Erdy McHenry Architecture . Kristy is currently editing the forthcoming publication Massive Attack, IoA Sliver Lecture Series-Selected Friends and Enemies.

Lecture Summary

BairBalliet is a joint design venture invested in architectural research in the form of both speculative and built projects. As designers they reference the current world around them, lean on a long history of precedents, and imagine what lies ahead in the form of two and three dimensional architectural projects. BairBalliet’s work has been exhibited internationally in the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale and in various locations around the United States including Los Angeles (The Architecture & Design Museum), Detroit (Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit), Chicago (The Night Gallery) and Pittsburgh (Miller Gallery/Carnegie Mellon University).
