  • Award Amount: a full scholarship to attend USHLI’s 36th National Conference in Chicago and a one time non-renewable $1,000 scholarship (4-year university) or $500 scholarship (2-year college)
  • Disbursement: Fall 2018 & Spring 2019; two payments will be mailed directly to the recipient’s institution.

Since 1982 USHLI has awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships and internships to students from the Latino community and similarly disenfranchised groups. Most notably, the Dr. Juan Andrade, Jr. Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders seeks to recognize Hispanics students who share Dr. Andrade’s lifelong commitment to servant leadership.

Qualifications: Applicant must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student, in an accredited four-year or two-year institution in the U.S. or U.S. territories, and demonstrate a verifiable need for financial support. At least one parent must be of Hispanic ancestry. Non-US citizens are eligible to apply (DACA or Undocumented). Recipients must also be available to attend the 36th National USHLI Conference in Chicago, IL, February 15-18, 2018.

Requirements The scholarship application is not considered complete until the following documents are received

  • Background Essay

Applicants must submit a 500-1000 word self-description in PDF format including his/her family history (parents, siblings), life and/or work experiences that have influenced the applicant, and pertinent extracurricular and community involvement activities.

  • Leadership Essay

Applicants must submit a 500-1000 word analysis in PDF format that describes the most pervasive issue in their community. How will they address it? How will their education and career experience help them address this issue?

  • Optional Essay

What else would you like to share with us that is relevant to your application being selected for this scholarship?

  • Résumé

Applicants must submit a one-page resume in PDF format of their work experience, academic accomplishments, and other relevant information.

  • Portrait Picture

Applicants must submit a recent photograph (high-resolution, color, size: 2.5 x3.5 ratios, PNG, JPG, or GIF). The picture should be suitable (head shot) for use in any printed literature announcing the recipients.

  • Transcript

Applicants must submit the most updated transcript. e.i. (College freshmen please submit your high school transcript). All transcripts must be attached as a PDF document to this form. Unofficial Transcripts are accepted.

  • Letters of Recommendation

Applicants must submit three (3) letters of recommendation that meet the following requirements: letters should focus on the applicant’s leadership abilities and past academic performance, while also indicating an ability or desire to effectively serve their community; individuals submitting letters of recommendation should have worked closely with the applicant in an academic, professional, or community service setting. Letters must be emailed to Adrian Calderon at acalderon@ushli.org by January 5, 2018.
