Physics Scholarships

James Martin Scholarship

The award will be given to the student who received the highest numerical grade in the Modern Physics 309 class each time it is taught. The student must also have received a letter grade of A. The student need not be a declared physics major. The Martin award will be presented by the Chair of the Physics Department at a department gathering. Each award will be in the amount of $300.

William L. Walters Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship valued at up to $2,000 is given to one or more incoming Freshmen who intend to major in Physics. The criteria that will be considered for this scholarship are:

  • Incoming freshman for Fall 2015
  • High school GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Composite ACT score of 26 or higher
  • Math ACT score of 28 or higher
  • Intended Physics major
  • Essay describing the student’s interest in Physics

To apply for the William L. Walters Memorial Scholarship, please complete the online application form by the deadline of April 15, 2015. Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.

Physics Pathway Scholarship

Two $5,000 scholarships are available. Eligibility and selection criteria are:

  • Incoming freshman for Fall 2015
  • High school GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Composite ACT score of 26 or higher
  • Math ACT score of 28 or higher
  • Intended Physics major
  • Completed with a B+ or better or currently taking at least one AP Math or AP Physics course in high school
  • Essay describing the student’s interest in Physics

Students selected for this scholarship will receive half of the award in Fall 2015. The second half of the award for Spring 2016 is contingent upon (1) successful completion (B+ or better) of Math 231 during the Fall 2015 term at UWM; (2) declaration of the Physics major at the end of the Fall 2015 term; (3) achievement of a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA during the Fall 2015 term; and (4) participation as an assistant in the Down-to-Earth Experimenal Physics Program (DEEP) at Shorewood Elementary Schools (Fifty hours required over the course of the 2015-16 school year and successful completion of the routine criminal background check by Shorewood School District.).
